Kilrush parents parking illegally

THE threat of being issued with a parking fine, while dropping or collecting their children from St Senan’s National School in Kilrush, continues to hang over at least 150 parents on a daily basis.
Double yellow lines were put in place outside the primary school last September and Councillor Tom Prendeville says the town council is currently turning a “blind eye” to parking on the lines. He raised the ongoing issue at last week’s Kilrush Town Council meeting.
“At the moment, there has been no fine meted out but it could happen in the future. The council said it was for the regulation of traffic but the point that I put to them is how could you have regulation of traffic outside a school where parents are dropping off kids? There isn’t even a drop-off zone.
“The council were quoting the Road Traffic Act but the bottom line is parents have to drop off kids. There should be a set-down area but there isn’t,” Councillor Prendeville said.
“Parents are concerned in case they would be approached by the traffic warden and they would get a fine for illegal parking. But at the moment, the council are turning a blind eye to it,” Mr Prendeville claimed.
Councillor Prendeville is hopeful that the double yellow lines will soon be reduced to single lines and offset the requirement for temporary illegal parking.
“The town engineer told us that they would be moved as soon as possible but, in the meantime, parents are parking there and it’s illegal parking in many ways.
“The engineer agreed that he would go back and remove some of the double lines and make them single, which would allow the set-up. He’s due to do that,” Councillor Prendeville added, noting that at “least 150 parents” are involved.
