Kilrush councillors to meet three of Clare’s TDs

THE nine Kilrush Town councillors are set to meet with three of the four Clare TDs on Monday. However, last week’s meeting of the town council heard Fine Gael TD Pat Breen will be unable to attend on that date. Deputies Carey, McNamara and Dooley have confirmed their attendance to Kilrush Town Clerk John Corry.
Last week’s meeting also heard the six local area county councillors will also be invited. This followed a suggestion from Councillor Paul Moroney that the town council should meet once if not twice annually with the local area councillors.

“It’s difficult to try and get a date that suits everyone but we have got three of the four TDs to agree to meet us on Monday at 3pm,” town clerk John Corry confirmed, adding Deputy Breen was unable to make it.

“Maybe, just inform him that we’re going ahead with the meeting without him and maybe he might try and rejig his schedule,” Councillor Liam O’Looney suggested.

The suggestion that Kilkee town councillors be invited was rejected by Councillor Moroney. “The idea was to speak about Kilrush. If Kilkee want to have their meeting with the West Clare councillors, they can do that,” he said.

Expanding on his desire to meet with the area councillors, Councillor Moroney said the idea made sense and should happen regularly.

“It’s a meeting I’ve wanted for a long time. I think we should meet definitely on an annual basis but if we could, we should meet every six months. Sometimes, I don’t know have we got the same thinking for Kilrush. Now I know their area is a lot bigger but Kilrush is in the heart of it,” he said.

“Even more so with the possibility of the National Famine Commemoration being held in Kilrush, which was a motion brought up at Clare County Council by the six West Clare councillors; we should be working together on stuff like that. I don’t know is thare enough communication going on. It’s not going to be a battlefield or anything, it’s just we should work together with the six lads that are there. I don’t know why it hasn’t been done before. I can’t understand why we don’t meet with them. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t,” he added.

“It would be no harm to have a meeting with them,” Councillor Liam O’Looney said, while Councillor Liam Williams described the idea of regular meetings with the local county councillors as “very worthwhile”.
