The Clare Athletics Association Senior Cross Country and Juvenile B Championships U-9 to U-15 were held on the lands of John and Bríd Collins, (Kilnaboy), on Sunday.
Big numbers competed in all races and the large attendance was treated to some very good running in very heavy underfoot conditions.
The senior ladies’ title was won by Veronica Colleran (Ennis Track) from last year’s title holder, Marie Carey (Ennis Track), with the bronze medal going to Cushla Bríd Hehir (Ennis Track) with Ennis Track retaining the Seamus Conlon Cup on 25 points from their second team on 27 points and Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare on 32 points.
The senior men’s race over 10,000m saw the 2008 and 2009 champion, Jason Fahy, (BMOH) produce a very big performance to take another title ahead of Kilnaboy man Michael Shannon, now running with St John’s, with Rory Chesser (Ennis Track) taking the bronze medal. For the first time, the All Army Perpetual Cup went to St John’s on 38 points. They beat Ennis Track, who were going for seven in a row, with BMOH in third spot.
There were outstanding contests in the juvenile B championships. In the girls’ U-9, Sarah O’Looney (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) led from start to finish to take the gold medal ahead of Aoifa Kelly and Grace McKiernan, (both St Mary’s) with Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare taking the team gold on 16 points with St Mary’s also on 16 and Marian on 34.
In the boys’ U-9, Cian O’Brien (Marian) finished ahead of Colin Kerrin (Shannon) and Thomas McGuire (Ennis Track) with (Ennis Track) taking the team gold ahead of St Mary’s and (Fergus).

In the girls’ U-13, 2,500m, four athletes were in contention with 800m remaining. Caoimhie Carmody (Marian) put in a big finish to take the gold medal from Clara Neylon (Marian) and Siobhán McMahon (Ennis Track). Marian won the team title on 20 points ahead of St John’s.
In the boys’ U-13, the Looney family recorded their second victory of these championships, with Oisín taking the gold ahead Eoin Guilfoyle (Shannon) and Zak McDonagh (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) with Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare taking the team title.
In the girls’ U-15 3,000m there was a win for Anna Courtney (Marian) from Katie Power (Ennis Track) and Katie Taylor (St Cronan’s), with (Ennis Track) taking the team gold.
In the boys’ U-15, Mark Fennell (St Mary’s) was very impressive, leading from start to finish to take the gold medal ahead of Jason McIntyre (Shannon) and Conor O’Leary (Fergus), with Fergus taking the team title.
The ladies’ race was run over a distance of 5,000m and the underfoot conditions were starting to get heavy.
Veronica Colleran, Marie Carey (Ennis Track) both set the pace along with Cushla Bríd Hehir and guest athlete Eimear Power (Sportsworld) and there was a chasing group of six athletes that included Grace Eade, Becky Coughlan, Jackie O’Connor (Ennis Track), Harriett Flynn (Shannon), Dympna O’Dwyer and Michelle O’Mahoney (both Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare).
Going out for the final lap, Veronica Colleran was starting to stamp her authority on the race with Marie Carey moving well and still in close contention with Cushla Bríd Hehir third, just ahead of Jackie O’Connor.
On the final lap, Veronica Colleran was starting to come under pressure from Marie Carey but over the final 400m she just held on to claim gold, with Cushla Bríd Hehir a very good third.
The senior men’s 10,000m championship attracted the biggest field of athletes for the past number of years, with almost 50 going to the start. Guest athlete Brian Maher (Kilkenny City Harriers) set a lively pace along with Rory Chesser (Ennis Track).
With almost one lap complete, St John’s had five athletes in the top eight. Rory Chesser was out in front as they were about to head out on the second lap but Jason Fahy made a very decisive move on the good ground along with the guest athlete Brian Maher.
Jason Fahy, who won this title in 2009, was in total control of this race with two laps remaining.
Local man Michael Shannon started to pull away from Rory Chesser and he took control of second spot to claim the silver medal after a mighty battle with Chesser.
The next four places were filled by St John’s, with the fast-finishing Jake O’Regan fourth, Munster novice champion Damian Landers fifth, Kenny Rodgers sixth and Dermot Galvin seventh.
St John’s won the All-Army Perpetual Cup on 38 points from (Ennis Track) on 63 points and BMOH on 96.
In the senior B, Ennis Track won the team gold on 145 from Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare on 153.
