KILMALEY United captured the Third Division League Cup title at the county grounds in Doora on Sunday when they overcame the challenge of Treaty Celtic.
A strong breeze and soft underfoot conditions made matters difficult for the players.
Kilmaley started brightly and dominated the early exchanges but, gradually, Treaty Celtic got a grip on the tie and put pressure on the Kilmaley defence.
On the half hour mark, they had their first goal chance but a shot from Tadhg Cronin was saved by Kilmaley keeper, Dave Ghekincki.
Ten minutes later, Kilmaley took the lead when a long-range free kick was headed goalwards by John Sherlock. The ball struck the crossbar but bounced behind the goal line for what proved to be the crucial goal.
Treaty dominated the exchanges in the second half but the Kilmaley defence coped with whatever came their way.
Treaty’s best chance of an equaliser came two minutes from the end when Alan Considine looked set to score but his well hit effort went inches outside the upright.
After the game, Clare soccer league PRO Gerry O’Scanlan presented the trophy to the winning team.
