Kilkee in near darkness for bank holiday weekend

MOST of Kilkee was in darkness over the bank holiday weekend as a blown fuse caused much of the town’s public lighting to fail. In fact, once darkness fell, only the newly installed promenade lights on the Strand Line worked. Ironically, the town was exceptionally busy throughout the June Bank Holiday weekend.

“As soon as I became aware of the problem, we alerted Airtricity on the matter. It was an issue with a fuse. Hopefully, it won’t occur again,” Kilkee town clerk John Corry said at this week’s June town council meeting.

“I was told that even the gardaí were on to Airtricity over it. O’Curry Street was quite menacing on Saturday night,” Mayor of Kilkee, Paddy Collins revealed.
“Two people I know called Airtricity and they told them that it was a problem for Clare County Council,” Councillor Lily Marrinan Sullivan stated.

Meanwhile, businesses placing street furniture and advertising signs on Kilkee streets has also annoyed town councillors.

John Corry told the meeting that a licence is required to erect signs or to place street furniture close to a business.
“It is now a free for all. I’ve been bringing it up in this council for years. It as been allowed to fester in this town and now it’s out of control,” Councillor Marrinan Sullivan claimed..
