Kilkee councillor questions community centre tendering process

Car Tourismo Banner

KILKEE Town Council is to seek a meeting with members of the Kilkee Community Centre committee to ascertain howit went about hiring tradesmen to carry out recent work on the building, which is located almost opposite the parish church.

“I’ve been approached by a number of people in the last couple of weeks about the community centre. They’re just wondering about the work that’s happening there at the moment. Local tradesmen are wondering was the work tendered out?” Councillor Brian Keane queried at Monday’s town council meeting.

“I’ve been told that doors and windows have been replaced and that painting has taken place during the summer. One tradesman, who has a business in town, was wondering how is it he wasn’t approached for a price. He employs about seven people and he makes windows and doors,” Councillor Keane said.

“Seeing as we have two members of the community centre board here, maybe ye could update us a small bit on the work that’s happening there at the moment,” he said, referring to Councillors Mary Owen and Michael ‘Hopper’ McGrath. The latter denied that he was a board member.

“It’s not our business. Couldn’t Councillor Keane write to the community centre committee himself?” Councillor McGrath suggested.

“It’s for fire safety it’s being done,” Councillor Owens explained.

However Mayor of Kilkee Claire Haugh said that it wasn’t the town council’s role to get involved in the operation of the community centre.

“There is a committee in place and they look after the workings of the community centre,” Councillor Haugh stated.

“We had a meeting with two members of the committee six months ago. They were supposed to come back to us and meet us,” Councillor Keane interjected.

“Can we write to the committee asking them what is the procedure that they use when work needs to be done?” Councillor Lily Marrinan Sullivan asked.
