THE Clare Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships were held on the lands of Maureen and Thomas McGuire Mullagh last week and attracted a fine turnout.
The best overall school award, the Tully Cup, went to Kilkee Community School on 15 points with second spot filled by St Michael’s Kilmihil on 13 points while, in third place were last year’s title holders Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon on six points.
The first race of the day was the minor girls’ 1,000m and this was a very good contest with Áine Rouine (Scoil Mhuire, Ennistymon) winning the title from Gráinne Cremin (Coláiste Muire Ennis) and Ailbhie Hogan (Coláiste Muire Ennis). Coláiste Muire took the team gold on 14 points over Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon on 37 points and Kilkee on 71 points.
The minor boys’ 1,500m was a race dominated by Micheál Clancy (St Michael’s Kilmihil) with Jason McCarthy (Ennistymon CBS) crossing the finishing line in second place followed by Keelan Sexton (Spanish Point). St Michael’s Kilmihil took the gold medals on 30 points from Ennistymon CBS on 50 points and Kilkee on 72 points.
In the junior girls’ 1,500m, Rachel Clancy (Kilkee Community School) dominated from start to finish with Nollaig Blake (St Michael’s Kilmihil) taking the silver medal followed home by Áine Looney (Kilrush Community School). The team gold wentto Kilkee Community School on 38 points followed by Gael Choláiste An Chláir on 52 points and Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon on 66 points.
The junior boys’ 2,000m was a much closer affair with two Gael Choláiste An Chláir athletes contesting this title. Stiofán Rooney won the title from Jacob Loughnane with the bronze medal going to Conail Ó Hainifin, also Gael Choláiste An Chláir, who recorded a very easy team victory with 12 points from St Michael Kilmihil on 53 points and St Joseph’s Tulla on 55 points.
In the intermediate girls’ 3,000m, the Munster Cross Country champion Jean Clancy (Kilmihil) produced a fine piece of front running to win in fine style from her twin sister, Niamh, with the bronze medal going to Laura Egan (Kilmihil). St Michael’s Kilmihil won the team gold on 21 points from Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon on 45 points with the bronze medals going to Kilkee Community School on 46 points.
In the intermediate boys’ 3,000m, Ian Slobody (St John’s Bosco Kildysart) made a very decisive move after 1,500m and was always in control at the front and he came home an easy winner with Conor Madigan (Kilrush) having a fine run to take the silver medal ahead of Conchur Ó Ruanaidh (Gael Choláiste An Chláir). Kilkee Community School won the team title on 36 points from St Michael’s Kilmihil on 37 points and Kilrush on 48 points.
In the senior girls, Imogen Cotter (Gael Choláiste An Chláir), the Munster Cross Country champion, cruised to a very fine victory ahead of Ailish Brew (Kilkee) and Róisín Looney (Kilrush) with Kilkee winning the team title on 22 points from St Michael’s Kilmihil on 35 points and Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon on 44 points.
The final race on the programme was the senior boys’ 5,000m. Kilkee Community School had a big contingent and Jake O’Regan raced into an early lead. He was always in control to come home an easy winner from Declan Keniry and Shane Keane, both Kilkee Community School. They easily captured the team title with a total of 10 points from Ennistymon CBS on 60 points and third, St Michael’s Kilmihil on 61 points.
