Kilkee boundary extension plans move forward

RESIDENTS of the Cluain na Mhara and Moore Bay estates in Kilkee should be able to vote in the 2014 Kilkee Town Council elections when the Kilkee boundary extension is complete.

A draft copy of the proposal to extend the Kilkee town boundary was presented to the town council’s meeting on Monday. George’s Head will also officially become part of Kilkee town if the draft document is adopted.
The exclusion of Cluain na Mhara residents, which is a local authority housing estate, from having a vote in the 2009 Kilkee Town Council elections, perplexed town councillors and angered residents.
The estate, which was opened approximately four years ago, is located less than half a mile from the centre of Kilkee and almost directly across the Carrigaholt Road from Marian Estate.
However, despite effectively living in the town, residents were only entitled to vote in the county council and not the town council elections.
Moore Bay is primarily an estate that is used by holiday home owners.
