John KellyIt’s described as the ‘best in the west’ and it’s a well-deserved accolade for Kildysart Agricultural Show, which is being held for the 69th year this Saturday.
Always attracting large numbers of exhibitors in both the animal, craft and produce classes, Kildysart also enjoys the loyal support of members of the public from all over Clare and well beyond.
Kildysart 2011 is looking really good as far as the organisers are concerned. Entries are up and the enthusiastic show committee members are busy putting the finishing touches to the show rings and showjumping fences in the main field and the shelving in the community centre, which serves as the exhibition hall.
“We have an action-packed programme; our highlights are the Shannonside League for showjumping ponies as well as many show jumping classes in all grades and the All-Ireland two-year-old filly final, with a grand prize of €1,000,” said organiser Bridget Garry.
The Kildysart Show is noted for its great turnout of mares and foals while working hunter ponies are also catered for.  Cattle are a huge attraction, as are donkeys and dogs.
Further enhancing the family-friendly character of the show, the main field will also feature lots of side attractions for children and adults including a vintage display, trade stands, full bar facilities and catering, Bridget outlined.
Back in the village, the community centre will be buzzing with the displays of home baking, fruit and vegetables, farm produce, flowers, arts and crafts. There are special categories for senior citizens and schoolchildren to display their talents.
“We really have huge support for the exhibition hall classes every year and the standard is exceptionally high across the board,” said Bridget.
To encourage people to create a sense of occasion at the show, the committee has organised a best-dressed lady competition, with the proceeds going to the Cian Cleary Benefit Fund.
“This is our 69th show and we want make sure it’s an overwhelming success. If it is, we will have a solid foundation laid for our big 70th show next year,” Bridget concluded.
