KILDYSART Drama Group will present their production of Michael J Ginnelly’s A Wake in the West in the community centre this Saturday and Sunday night.

A Wake in the West is one of the most popular plays on the amateur drama circuit. It is a laugh-a-minute comedy, set on the outskirts of a fishing village in the West of Ireland.

One of the village’s best known characters, Tom Healy, played by Michael Keane, passes away and the audience is treated to an unusual wake, where circumstances, family and neighbours combine to create great family entertainment.

Tom’s close friend, Barney, played by Frankie O’Shea, Barney’s wife Margaret, played by Geraldine O’Connell and near neighbour, Rose, played by Liza Nagle, arrive to sympathise with Tom’s son and daughter, played by Ger Kelly and Anna Leahy and soon realise the family are not too keen on carrying out Tom’s final wishes.

However, with local doctor, Dr John, played by newcomer John Kelly insisting on adhering to Tom’s last request and priest Fr Cassidy, played by John Convey, willing to facilitate the request, the funeral is to take place as he wanted. Tom’s favourite neighbour, Joan, played by Therese McGolderick, is happy that the old man is being afforded the respect he deserves.

This is the 15th year that Kildysart Drama Group has staged a play. Over the years, the group have produced many memorable plays, including John B Keane classics and comedies by Jimmy Keary and Ray Cooney. Founding member Colin McMahon is the director for this year’s production.

After weeks of rehearsals, he is confident the audience will be treated to plenty of laughs this weekend.
Doors will open at 7.45pm and the curtain will go up at 8.30pm each night.
