Keen competition for hampers at Shannon


Scoring was high when the men’s hamper competition took place at Shannon last weekend. Jim Fitzgerald (9) was the winner with a superb score of 48 points.

 

He won by three from Anthony Connolly (14) with Seamus Doyle (11) in third spot, also with 45 points. Barry Murphy (14) was fourth and he also scored 45 points and was followed by Billy Grimes (15) with 44 points, Chris Harrigan (8) with 43 points and Sean Murphy (20) with 42 points. Michael Allen (8) won the gross with 36 points.
In the men’s 15-hole singles last Wednesday, Paul McElligott (12) was the winner with 35 points.
The ladies’ 15-hole Stableford competition last week was won by Mary McGuane (28) with 31 points from Christine Halpin (24) with 28 points and Eileen McNamara (23) with 27 points.

Ennis

Ennis seniors held a modified scramble last week when the winners were Michael Culliney, Owen Flanagan and Don Ryan with 77 points from Pat O’Reilly, Jim Hennessy and Pat Cahill with 76. In third place with 74 points were Tim McAllister, Sean Fitzpatrick and Ollie Kenneally followed by Tony Blake, Sean O’Gorman Jimmy McNamara and Luke Coote with 74, Kevin Murray, Frank Landy and Conor Murphy with 74, Joe Dilleen, Tom Pender and Michael Kenny with 73.
In the ladies’ October league, Margaret Lacheiner won week three with 32 points from Mary Lenihan on 31 points.
In the ladies’ seniors outing, the winners were Jean Considine, Mary McMahon and Bridie Keane from Ann Casey, Alice Darcy and Carmel Verling.

Woodstock
Michael Daffy (19) was the winner of the Christmas hamper competition at Woodstock at the weekend with 48 points. He had two to spare over Dermot O’Neill (14) with third spot filled by Tony Fogarty (18) with 45 points.
This weekend’s competition will be the final Christmas hamper outing.
Woodstock seniors

The weekly seniors competition at Woodstock was a team of three modified scramble over 15 holes. The winners were Bobby Burke, Tom Dormer and Nick Germaine with 57 points.
The seniors’ annual Christmas competition followed by dinner and the annual general meeting will take place next Tuesday, November 15. The competition will be 18 holes Stableford and will begin at 11.30am with dinner and the annual meeting to follow in the clubhouse.

Dromoland
In the Christmas hampers Stableford competition at Dromoland the winner was Nicky Duggan with 43 points from Robert Deegan on 39 and John Porter with 39. They were followed by Pat McGrath with 38, Flan Sheedy with 38, Willie Fitzgerald with 37, Tony Byrne with 37, Barry Moloney with 36, Tony Cleary with 36 and Seamus Mungovan with 36. The 18 and over category was won by Pádraig McDaid with 36 points while Jason O’Leary won the students’ section with 42 and Sean Shanahan won the junior section with 43.
This weekend’s competition is an 18-hole singles Stableford event. Members participating in the senior matchplay competition are requested to adhere to matchplay dates.

Lahinch
In the open singles at Lahinch last Thursday, Michael Crowley (3) from Naas was the winner with 40 points from John Dillon (5) with 38 points and Colm McInerney (11) with 37 points.
Friday’s ladies’ invitational team-of-four competition on the Castle Course was won by Connie Fahy (19) Lahinch, Anne-Marie Sexton (22) Ballybunion, Helena Tiernan (24) Limerick and Caitríona O’Neill (30) Dromoland with 90 points from Olivia Lucas (9) Lahinch, Aedín McCarthy (12) Killeen, Fiona McCarthy (15) Lahinch and Jenny Gracey (24) Killeen with 88. In third spot with 84 points were Niamh Whelan (10) Kilrush, Jenny Cagney (14) Lahinch, Marie O’Connor (15) Lahinch and Angela Downey (36) Spanish Point.
There was a men’s singles Stableford competition on the championship course on Saturday when the winner was John O’Connor (11) with 42 points from Eoin Glynn (6) with 41 and Tom Doyle (12) with 39. Ronan Cooney won the gross with 32 points.
In the ladies’ turkey singles on Sunday on the Castle Course, Elayne Hickey (10) was the winner with 35 points from Kay Vaughan (17) with 34 points.

East Clare
In the men’s singles competition at East Clare at the weekend, Stephen B Moloney (11) was the winner with 43 points from Pat McKenna with 42 points.
The ladies’ three-club competition was won by Siobhán Shanahan with 30 points from Catherine Murphy with a similar score.
The mixed matchplay final took place last Saturday and Maurice Costelloe and Mary Mannion defeated Teddy O’Hanlon and Catherine Minogue. Teddy and Catherine were one up with three holes to play but Maurice and Mary finished birdie, par, par to win the match on the 18th.
Throughout November there will be a nine-hole mixed competition, which can be played any day. There will be a men’s singles this weekend.There will be Mass for deceased members in the clubhouse on Monday, November 28 at 7pm.

Portumna
In the men’s 15-hole singles Stableford competition at Portumna at the weekend, Leslie O’Meara (8) won the 0-10 category with 32 points. Other winners were Cyril Lowry (13) with 32 points in the 11-14 category, James O’Meara (17) with 37 points in the 15-18 category, Pauric Moroney (22) with 31 points in the 19 and over category and PJ Hogan (26) with 34 points in the senior category.
The ladies’ AGM takes place this Sunday at 4pm in the clubhouse.
The incoming lady captain is Ina Moran. 
The annual mass for deceased members and friends of Portumna Golf Club will be held this Friday at 8pm in the clubhouse. 
The winners of the October three-ball were Damien (12), Patsy (11) and Enda Quigley (18) with 54 points. In second place were Albert Shanahan (1), Joe Manley (12) and Michael Reddington (14) from Charleville with 53 points.
The three-ball competition continues until April 2012, with two teams going through each month.

Spanish Point

Recently, the club welcomed the hurlers of ­Na ­Piarsaig GAA Club, Limerick, who as Limerick champions are preparing for their first Munster Championship game, which takes place this Sunday.
Under their coach Sean Stack, they trained on the beach in the morning and afterwards relaxed with a visit to the practice nets and the chipping and putting areas and some played a few holes.
The Clare/Galway Winter Seniors group played ­Spanish Point two weeks ago and more than 70 seniors were delighted to get their game in good underfoot conditions and all were impressed with the quality of the greens.
Competitions continue and the seniors open last week was won by Eamonn Murphy (10) with 39 points. The Friday open winner with 36 points was Willie McNamara (15).
Last weekend the turkey competition was played in fourball betterball format and the winners were Noel McMahon (19) and Eoghan O’Loughlin (3) with 44 points from Gerry Gallagher (22) and Martin Shanahan (23) with 41 points.
The ladies’ club held their annual meeting last week and the following officers were elected: lady captain, Nuala Kilroy; vice-captain, Helen Sullivan; ex-officio, Breda Murphy; secretary, Maura O’Boyle; treasurer, Kathleen Twomey; handicap secretary, Mary Cleary; committee, Bernadette O’Gorman and Ann White.
At the men’s club AGM the following officers were elected for 2012: captain, Noel McMahon; vice-captain, Eoghan O’Loughlin; ex-officio, Mike Hennessy; secretary Fergal Hehir; treasurer, Jim Marrinan; committee, Páidi McGough, Martin Glenny, Liam Ryan, Brendan Sexton.

Gort

The winners of the men’s fourball competition at Gort at the weekend were David O’Dell and John Tierney with 45 points from Pat Flanagan and Tommy Madden, who had a similar score. Rory Gantley and Colin Whealan were in third spot with 44 points. There will be a singles hampers competition this Saturday and Sunday. 

Doonbeg Golf Society
Doonbeg Golf Society will hold an outing to Lahinch (Castle course) this Sunday when the tee will be available from 10am to 1am. Members wishing to play should contact Tom O’Dea at 086 2799254.

Clare junior golf
This year 46 juniors took part in the Clare Junior Open Golf Championship that was staged at Dromoland Castle. The weather conditions on the day were very testing.
The winners were: U-14: 1. Mark Flynn, Castletroy; 2. Ryan Mulligan, Dromoland; 3. Connor McCarthy Dromoland. U-16: 1. John Dillon, Lahinch; 2. J Shannahan, Dromoland; 3. Noel Bugler, East Clare. U-18: 1. Cormac Walsh, Woodstock; 2. Milan Radish, Rathbane; 3. Jonathan Chan, Woodstock. Girls: 1. Ciara Magill, East Clare.

 

Pitch and Putt
At the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday, Tommy Kelly won the Helen Cuddihy Memorial Trophy with Gareth Kerin in the runners-up spot followed by Ger Hanrahan.
There will be a club competition on this Sunday.
