Keelan Sexton from Mullagh will represent Ireland for the first time next week when he competes in the European schoolboy boxing championships in Grozny, Chechnia.
The Ennis club member is part of a ten person Irish team which departs for Frankfort today (Thursday) in the first leg of their journey.
Sexton won his third Irish title last April at 70 kilos. There is no 70kilos division at the European event so Keelan had to bring his weight down so as to be eligible for the 68kg division and he managed to do that.
The championships commence next Monday and continue throughout the week before concluding on Saturday
Fourteen year old Keelan is the youngest of the ten member Irish side. He has been travelling from his West Clare home to Dublin twice a week for the past year to train with the elite panel.
He is following in the footsteps of Trevor Markham and Brian Crowley, both of whom got into the medals at these championships. They were both aged 16 when they took part at the European tests.
Hopes are high that Keelan can get amongst the medal winners
