Cultúrlann Sweeney library in Kilkee is currently hosting a photographic display of Ireland, both south and north by local photographer Josephine Glynn. The exhibition, entitled Josephine’s Ireland, opened on Wednesday evening.
Over the years Josephine’s experience as a national tour guide has given her the opportunity to get to know her country well. In this exhibition she returns to many scenic places and observes many aspects of Ireland some of which are not well-known.
Josephine has been taking photos and making videos since 1993 when she returned from working in Australia and bought a video camera. She has done many courses in filmbase and the Galway Film Centre but now directs her attention to still photography.
She completed a video of reminiscence commissioned by Age Action The Good Old Days in two day centres in Galway and Castlebar which was widely distributed portraying a very positive approach to ageing.
In June 2012 this video received an award at an international conference on ageing in Prague. At the same conference, Josephine also received an award for three pictures of older people aged 104, 100 and 83 years. The pictures were displayed at the conference that was attended by about 800 delegates worldwide.
Josephine’s Ireland presents photographs and some pictorial stories of places, events, local history and festivals. All the photos were taken in Ireland, mostly on the west coast but reaching from Tyrone Armagh to Clare and Kerry. However the latter counties dominate the selection on display.
It is hoped that these pictures will inspire many, and especially young people like transition year students, to observe and document our magnificent coastal scenery, local customs, wildlife and wild flowers
Most of the photos were taken in 2012 and some recently like on St Brigid’s Feast, February 1.
Other images capture the arrival of the Celtic Mist for dolphin research last summer; the building of a traditional fishing boat; the opening of the Loophead Lighthouse and an abundance of wildlife and wild flowers.
Josephine is a committed photographer whose fervent wish is to “continue to observe and record our own country Ireland”.
The official opening was performed by Councillor Gabriel Keating and artist Carmel Madigan on Wednesday.
