JB Carr dream dies at the 20th


The dream of a second All-Ireland JB Carr title in three years ended at Woodenbridge on Sunday when Ennis were pipped by Ballinrobe.

With the match tied at 2-2, the outcome of the final game was crucial. This went to the 20th, where Eamonn Corry and Tony Kehoe were eventually beaten in the decisive match.

Eamonn Kelly and Luke Coote, along with Matt Flynn and Pat Murphy, won their matches on Sunday. Noel Pyne and Johnnie Cullinan were beaten on the 17th while Paul Higgins and Tony Coote lost on the 19th, having been two up with three to play.

In Saturday’s semi-final, Ennis beat the Island, winning the top three matches with, the remaining two called in.

Meanwhile, on Thursday last, the Ennis seniors captain’s (Willie Moloney) prize was played for and there was a full-time sheet for the event, which was won by Val Bredin with a score of 39 points. He finished ahead of Ollie Kenneally, who had a similar score, with Sean O’Gorman, also with 39 points, in third spot.

They were followed by Michael Considine with 38, Pat Cahill, Michael Dempsey, William O’Delaney, Tom Fox, Tom Purcell and Joe O’Brien, all with 37 points. Pat Lucey won the gross with 30 points. The nines were won by Tim McAllister and Jim Scully, each with 21 points.  Kieran E Ryan won the guests’ section with 38 points while John Bolger won the visitors’ prize. Nearest the pin prizes were won by Michael Cummins and Tony Coote on a day when 128 played in the competition.

In the ladies’ section, the winner was Margaret Lacheiner with 28 points from Phil Butler on 27, Della Burns with 25 and Jean Moloney with 24. Thirty played in this section.

In the Friday open singles, the winner was Joe Griffin with 40 points from Roy Duggan with a similar score. Liam O’Dwyer was third with 37 points followed by Darren Kierse with 37 points. Victor Coote won the gross with 30 points.

The annual Pascal O’Brien memorial competition was held on Saturday and the winner was Walter O’Brien with 40 points from John Stack on 39 points, Tony McEnery on 37 points, Mike Butler on 36 points, Gerry Gilligan on 34 points and Paddy Lane on 34 points.

In the ladies’ section the winner was Sinéad Hegarty with  37 points from Flor Coffey with 34 points.

In the Ennis members’ section the winner was Ger O’Halloran with 38 points from Cillian Enright on 36 points, Brian Warner on 35 points, John McBriles on 35 points, Ronan Nalty on 35 points, Conor Tierney on 35 points, David Considine on 35 points and Gearóid Walsh on 35 points.

In the men’s 18-hole scramble on Sunday the winners were Ian Myatt, John Blessington and Noel O’Connor from Tom Woulfe, Declan Downey and Kieran Fox.

In the ladies’ monthly medal, the winner in the silver division was Ann O’Loughlin from Suzanne Deane, both with 77 nett, with Bridget Hoey in third spot on 80 nett.

In the bronze section, the winner was Celia Reilly with 75 nett from Helen Hartnett on 76 and Flor Coffey on 79.

In the senior ladies’ outing the winners were Mary Walsh, Loretta Torpey and Susan O’Brien with 41 points from Mary Colton, Margaret McEnery and Mary Gardner with 40 with Kathleen Frehill, Bernie Brooks and Jeane Dunne next with 39 points.

The Ballinrobe team that won the JB Carr title last week, beating Ennis in the final, included a Clareman in their line-up.

Bart Crowley from Kilrush, a former Clare minor footballer, was a key member of the Mayo club side.
The Leinster champions, The Island, who were beaten by Ennis in the semi-final, also included a Clareman in their line-up, Tom Boland from Kilkee.


Lahinch

The winners of the ladies’ fourball Stableford on the Castle Course in Lahinch last week were Gráinne D’Alton (5) and Valerie Hassett (7) with 42 points. They had one to spare over Jean Basheer (16) and Gráinne Hennessy (15).

In the men’s singles Stableford on Saturday the winner was Pádraig Hayes (9) with 36 points from Pat Vaughan (14) with 33 points and Richard Meaney (15) with 31 points Niall Shaw won the gross with 26 points.
Sunday’s men’s fourball Stableford was won by Michael Hennessy (6) and Noel Connellan (11) with 43 points from Paul McInerney (5) and Frank Considine (10) with 40 points.

The McDonnell Cup, a mixed fourball Stableford competition, was played on the Castle Course on Sunday where Vincent (26) and Mary O’Doherty (13) won with 46 points from Bill (13) and Rosaleen Fraser (22) with 43 points. In third spot were Conor (16) and Maire Hanrahan (23) with 43 points while the gross was won by Brendan O’Doherty and Mary Sadlier with 33 points.


Doonbeg

It was a weekend of finals in Doonbeg. Pat Cotter and Diarmaid O’Donnell played Timmy Killeen and Noel McMahon in the final of the fourball matchplay. Cotter and O’Donnell were comprehensive winners with a 7&6 victory to claim the Perpetual Cup.

In the summer league final run over Saturday and Sunday, Kevin Hayes went into the final day with a comprehensive lead but Declan Conway hauled him back and pipped him for victory. Nigel Dillon was third.
Dillon was the recent winner of the club singles followed by Francis McInerney in second place.

The club singles matchplay will start in the next couple of weeks.

Woodstock
The August monthly medal was played for at Woodstock on Saturday when the winner was Jack Bugler (14) with 69 net from Keith Farr (6) on 71 net. The gross was won by Cathal O’Connor (2) with 75.

East Clare
In a men’s golfer-of-the-year competition at East Clare, the winner was Martin Tuohy (18) with 66 nett from Martin Crotty (18) on 66 nett, Barry Hurley (9) on 69 nett and Ben Kilkenny (12) on 69 nett.

The men’s Stableford winner was Mike Gough (21) with 41 points.

In the ladies’ medal, the winner was Fiona Kinsella, 67 nett, from Catherine Minogue, 70 nett. The category winners were Siobhán Shanahan, 72 nett, Brigid Minogue, 73 nett and Pauline Nugent, 71 nett.

The winners of the Friday nine-hole scramble were Catherine Minogue, Mary Collins and Stephen Moloney from Peg Hanrahan, Pat McNamara, Noreen Doyle and Ted Harrington. In third place were Jim Greene, Sylvia Clancy and Mike Gough followed by Louise Whelan, Mike Whelan and Kieran Sheedy.

The winners of the ladies’ seniors competition were Sue Casey, Pat Williams and Mary Joe Minogue from Mary Bugler, Marie Moloney and Connie McKenna.

There will be an 18-hole Stableford competition for the men this weekend while the ladies’ vice-captain’s prize will be played for. There will be a men’s seniors open next Tuesday. There will also be a member’s information evening in the clubhouse on Tuesday next at 8pm.

Kilrush
The seniors outing at Kilrush last week was won by John Robinson, Seamus O’Doherty, Tom Cleary and Maurice  Roche with 57 points followed by Jimmy McSwiggan, Noel Enright and John O’Neill     with 55 points, with third spot filled by John Donnelly, John McGrath and Bill Murphy with 53 points.

The ladies’ singles v par competition on Thursday was won by Miriam Saunders (26) with 36 points from Freda Moran (34) with 35 points and Mary Nolan (17) with 34 points. The categories were won by Niamh Whelan (10) with 32 points, Mary McCarthy (26) with 33 points and Peggy Mulqueen (31) with 33 points.

The winners of the Friday mixed were Anthony Burke, Declan O’Donovan, Geraldine Burke and Nicola O’Leary from Pat Shannon, Kieran Lillis, Tom Coffey and Margaret Clune.

In the Flan Brew memorial men’s singles on Sunday, the winner was Pat Brennan (7)    with 39 points from Jimmy McSwiggan (15) 37 points and Greg Young (5) with 36 points. Eric Dore had a hole in one at the 14th hole.

This Saturday, September 8, there will be a club fundraiser team of three (any combination) competition, with two scores to count at holes one to eight and 10 to 17 and three scores to count at the ninth and 18th.
A timesheet is available in the clubhouse.

The Moyasta Coffee Mens Open  Singles Stableford will take place this Sunday. The Beryl McNamara Memorial Ladies Competition will take place on Thursday, September 13.


Dromoland

At Dromoland at the weekend the winner of the men’s Stableford competition, a golfer of the year event, was Nicky Duggan with 40 points from Sean Shanahan, 37 points and John O’Grady, 36 points. The winner of the 18 and over handicap section was Philip O’Sullivan with 35 points.

This weekend’s competition is a strokeplay monthly medal and a golfer of the year competition.

The Irish Mixed Foursomes team, who are Munster champions, are competing in the All-Ireland semi-final this Thursday  at Clontarf Golf Club. The final will be held the following day.

The Holmpatrick Area Cup winners, Kevin Kent and Flan Sheedy, competed in the All-Ireland Holmpatrick Cup at Adare last week, where they were beaten in the play-offs.

In the ladies’ section in the Deirdre Fitzpatrick Memorial Trophy, the winner was Cora O’Toole on 37 points from Majella Cotgreave on 37 points,

Sheila Kent on 35 points and Mary O’Donnell O’Brien on 31 points.


Shannon

Anne Casey won the September ladies’ medal at Shannon with 71 nett from Dympna Hogan on 73, Anne Jones on 74 and Noeleen Neylon on 74. Rose Doyle won the gross with 86.

The winner of the men’s masters, played over 36 holes, was Jim Fitzgerald with 137 from Maurice Murphy on 138, Bryan Power on 142, Jim McNamara on 142 and Pat Hickey on 145. Ed Hickey won the gross on 152.

In the nett section, Noel Morgan was the winner with 69 from Vincent Hodge on 70.
Pat O’Rourke has won the golfer of the year award for 2012.

In the parent and child scotch foursomes on Sunday, the winners were Mark and Shane Fenton with 47 points from Jim and Niall McNamara on 45, Noel and David O’Brien on 43 and Tom and Avril O’Dea on 43.


Sixmilebridge

Sixmilebridge Society held an outing to Charleville last week when the winner was  Aiden Whelan from Mickey Corbett, with third spot filled by Mike Ryan. The nines were won by Ian Mulready and PJ Phelan while the category prizes were won by Mike Purcell, Bobby Deegan and John Nihill.
Spanish Point

Last weekend, Spanish Point organised their annual fundraising competition and were pleased with the response from members and guests. It was played over Friday, Saturday and Sunday in team-of-four scramble format.

The winners were Eoghan (3) and Gerry O’Loughlin (18), Brendan (16) and Damian Sexton (19).  In second place were Fergal (17) and Micheál Hehir (13), Kevin Hynes (16) and Pat Greene (15) followed by Martin Glenny (15), John Meere (16), Noel Connellan (17) and John Fitzgerald (20). In fourth place were Brendan Reddan (15), John O’Brien (13), Tony Crowley (19) and Patrick O’Dwyer (20) followed by Christy McCaw (18), John Skerritt (12), Brian Sexton (13), and Tony O’Connell (21) with sixth spot filled by Kathleen Twomey, Evelyn Kelly, Maura Burke and Eoghan O’Loughlin.

The winner of the recent nine-hole re-entry competition was PJ Killeen (18) with 23 points. Last week’s singles was won by John Fitzgerald (21) with 40 points. Next weekend, the club hosts the annual PJ Downes Memorial Intermediate Scratch Cup and there will also be a singles competition for those not qualified in the handicap category and timesheets are in the clubhouse.


Portumna

The winner of the lady captain’s (Ena Moran) prize at Portumna was Mary McElroy (25) with 72 nett from Audrey McGrath (25) with a similar score. They were followed by Bríd Kelly (24) with 73 nett, Mary M Madden (21) with 73 nett and Carmel Cunningham (15) with 76 nett. The gross was won by Ann Cassidy (2) with 79.

Other prize winners were: past captains, Anita Carey (13) 78 nett; seniors, Mable Conroy (26) 76; longest drive, Ann Cassidy; nearest the pin, Hilary Molloy; visitor lady, Lilly Graydon (27) 78 nett; visitor gent, Donal Brophy (5) 78 nett.

In the men’s competition, the winner was Jamie Conboy (6) 21 points from Pascal Moran (14) 21 points. The gross was won by John Cleary (4) 19 points.

The winners of the men’s 18-hole fourball competition were Gerry O’Meara (18) and Sean Darcy (19) with 46 points from  Leslie O’Meara (8) and Brian Grogan (17)  with a similar score. In third spot were Des Hennessy (16) and Pat Looby (16) with 45 points followed by Gerry (14) and Sarah Broderick with 44 points. The gross was won by  James McLoughlin (scr) and Ann Cassidy (2) with  37 points.

Last week’s Monday open was won by John Kelledy (14) with 41 points from Jamie Conboy (6) with 40 points and Brendan P Treacy (7) with 38 points. The gross was won by JP McLoughlin (scr) with 36 points.

The club will host a monthly three-ball from September to April next year. Monthly qualifiers will play a grand final in May 2013. Two teams qualify each month and two ladies are allowed per team.


Corofin

Corofin Golf Society members will be on the road again this weekend and will play at East Clare on Saturday for their President’s (Jimmy Lahiffe) prize. The prize-giving ceremony will take place at the clubhouse in Bodyke following the competition. The tee is reserved at the east Clare venue from 9.30am.

Cooraclare-Cree
The members of the Cooraclare-Cree Society will hold an outing to East Clare this Saturday and those planning on playing are asked to contact Michael Studdert at 087 2299476.


Pitch and putt

Michael Kerin was the winner of the Clare Road Junior Scratch Cup on Sunday last with PJ Considine second.
Niall Seery won the intermediate title with Martin Fawl taking the senior honours.

In the junior county stroke play competition, Denis McElligott was the winner, Niall Seery won the intermediate title while the senior award was won by Ger Hanrahan.

There will be a club competition this Sunday.
