Jazz and poetry evening

Car Tourismo Banner

An Ennistymon bookshop is to host an experimental poetry and jazz series on the last Friday of every month, beginning this weekend.
Proprietor of Banner Books, Gerry Harrison, is a jazz enthusiast and hopes the gigs will become as regular a part of Ennistymon’s scene as the traditional sessions in the local pubs.
The first guest poet will be a long-time Clare resident, Knute Skinner, who originally moved into the countryside of Killaspuglonane, near Lahinch, in 1964. An American from St Louis, Missouri, Knute has said that to settle in Clare was one of the most satisfying decisions that he and his wife Edna had made and they have since felt very much a part of the landscape. His poetry has appeared widely in Ireland, Britain, Australia and America. Knute will be signing his books, which will be on sale on the evening.
He will be accompanied by Ado Morris, from Milltown Malbay, on jazz guitar.
“Accompaniment by jazz musicians is regarded by him as something of a challenge and it will be interesting to see whether they will perform separately or together. We are now keen to build a list of jazz musicians who also enjoy this form of performance,” Gerry outlined.
The event starts at 7pm and continues until about 8.30pm and will be accompanied by wine and refreshments.
“Our place is quite small so seating is limited.  We anticipate a crowd so people should get here early,” Gerry suggested.
Jazz musicians wishing to contact Gerry can do so at Banner Books, Parliament Street, Ennistymon or by phone on 065 7071856 or at www.bannerbooks.ie.
