Investigation underway into Shannon crash


GARDAI in Shannon are investigating the circumstances around a crash that saw a boy sustain serious injuries on Sunday.

The crash took place in the Purcell Park area when a single vehicle struck the child, who is currently in hospital and understood to be in a very serious condition.

The entrance to Purcell Park has been closed to traffic, with local diversions in place. An examination of the scene is being carried out by Garda Forensic Collision investigators.

Local councillor Donna McGettigan said there is shock around Shannon following the accident. “I hope the boy does make a recovery, it’s an awful incident,” she said on Monday morning.

Councillor McGettigan said that councillors have sought safety measures on the stretch of roadway in question before, with plans in place for improvements there. 

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to Sunday’s accident to contact Shannon Garda Station on at 061 365900, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
