Duffy and Ali G top leader board

Gabriel Slattery was the star last weekend when two legs of the Olympic Saddlery Connaught Grand Prix Showjumping League took place.
Tubber and Ballina were the two venues and both suffered from downpours of rain to spoil the ground conditions. However, the spirit of those who competed was not daunted and the excitement of the changing leader board is very live.
Just 25 took on the Killian-Clarke-designed course in Tubber, where Gabriel Slattery excelled. He had three horses to jump and he rode all three of them faultlessly. There were no other first-round clears. As if that wasn’t enough, he did it again in the second round. It was noted he had been first, second and third in the same class at Tubber last year.
At the end of the competition, Gabriel and Castlelawn Kannan were back at the top of the leader board with 31 points and Michael Duffy and Ali G, who weren’t in Tubber, were in second place with 25.
The full results were as follows: 1. Castlelawn Kannan (Gabriel Slattery) Gabriel Slattery 0/0 38.92; 2. Captain’s Magic Touch (Gabriel Slattery) John Byrne 0/0 42.52; 3. Ballintougher Bud (Gabriel Slattery) Sean Breen/Maura Counihan 0/0 47.70; 4. Le One (Stephen Egan) Kieran Rowley 0/4 75.30; 5. Divo (John McManus) Philip McManus 0/4 80.10; 6. KMR Special Edition (Cormac Rafferty) Raphael Murray 0/4 80.88; 7. Vocalist (Sean Glynn) TVS Syndicate 0/4 82.46; 8. Little Miss Bungowla (Cian Melia) Darragh Hawkins 0/4 82.5.
Ballina staged the eighth leg of the competition where 46 starters and 10 competitors came through to the jump-off. Michael Duffy and Ali G returned to the fray in an attempt to regain top spot on the leader board, while Stephen Egan was also having a tilt at the same goal, having moved up to joint second place with Le One.
Gabriel’s mare was having an off day, as was Stephen Egan’s horse, while Ali G was in tremendous form. He played and bucked his way around the jump-off course to finish clear in 46.12 seconds but while that was good enough for second place, it didn’t match the performance put up by Stephen Egan on Le One’s full brother Le Crunch, who effortlessly came home clear in 45.53 seconds to win the class and the 10 leader board points.
The full results were: 1. Le Crunch (Stephen Egan) Kieran Rowley; 2. Ali G (Michael Duffy) Kathryn Duffy; 3. Whitestream Spirit (Stephen Egan) Sean Judge; 4. Zuidam (Declan McParland) John Carr; 5. KMR Taylor Made (Cormac Rafferty) Raphael Murray; 6. Carthago ll Z (Michael Duffy) Kathryn Duffy; 7. Wodanga G (Tiernan Gill) Tiernan Gill; 8. Top of the Pack (Richard Kerins) Ann Smurfit.
The current leader board standings are as follows: 1. Michael Duffy/Ali G 33 points; 2. Gabriel Slattery/Castlelawn Kannan 31; 3. Stephen Egan/Le One 25; 4. Gabriel Slattery/Captain’s Magic Touch 19; 5. Thomas O’Brien/ Dunsoghly Junior 18.
