Intermediate semi-final pairings confirmed

The line-up for the semi-finals of the Clare intermediate Hurling Championship was finalised on Saturday when the final round of games in the league series were played.

Saturday’s results also confirmed that Meelick and Clarecastle would battle it out in the relegation play-off, with the losers dropping down to junior A level for next season.Éire Óg and Ruan beat Corofin and Parteen respectively on Saturday in the top-of-the-table clashes in group one and two. This means the town side will play Parteen in the semi-final, leaving neighbours Ruan and Corofin to do battle in the other semi.

Éire Óg  3-17 
Corofin  2-8

Éire Óg were in a strong position to win this game when they went to the break leading by two points after playing against the breeze in the opening half. Helped by a goal from Barry Nugent, the Ennis men were 1-7 to 1-5 in front at the break.
They went on to be well on top in the second half when Nugent had a second goal while teenager Shane O’Donnell, who had a very good game, scored their third. He finished with a tally of 1-2.
Danny Russell was another to impress for the winners, scoring 0-6.
The Heagney brothers, Kevin and Stephen, were the goalscorers for Corofin.

Ruan  2-12 
Parteen 1-10

Ruan laid the foundations for this victory in the opening half when they raced into a 1-8 to 0-2 lead, with the goal coming from John Punch. When the half-time whistle sounded, they had a six-point advantage, with the score at 1-8 to 0-5.
Helped by a goal from Brian McSweeney, Parteen fought back in the second half but a second Ruan goal from Robbie O’Loughlin kept them in front and they went on to record a merited win.

Ogonnelloe 2-15
Feakle  3-12

Ogonnelloe made sure of their intermediate status for 2012 by drawing with Feakle at Scariff on Saturday evening.
The foundation for the result was laid in the opening half, when Ogonnelloe raced into a 1-12 to 0-6 win after playing with the aid of the wind. Peter O’Brien was their goalscorer in the opening half and he also accounted for most of their points.
On the turnover, Feakle came storming back into the contest and two quick goals helped them draw level early in this period.
Ogonnelloe’s second-half goal came from Rory Skelly and the sides were level early in the final quarter. Feakle’s goals came from Gary Guilfoyle, Colin Nelson and Donal O’Grady.  The final seven minutes were scoreless, despite the efforts of both sides to snatch a winner.

Meelick 0-11

First-half goals from Cathal Malone and Paudie Brennan helped Ennistymon to a comfortable win over Meelick, a result that guarantees the North Clare side intermediate status for 2012.
The winners were 2-8 to 0-7 in front at the break and managed to maintain that gap throughout the second half.

Crusheen 2-16 
Bodyke 2-10

Crusheen completed their intermediate championship campaign on a winning note when accounting for Bodyke at Tulla on Saturday.
They were well on their way to victory when they led 2-12 to 0-4 at half-time, the goals coming from Dara O’Doherty and Niall Fitzgibbon.
With wind advantage in the second half, Bodyke hit back and their goals came from Ciaran Walsh and John Fitzgerald, who was shown a red card shortly before the final whistle.

Clarecastle 0-15
Sixmilebridge 0-14

Clarecastle secured their first win of the campaign when they pipped Sixmilebridge last Wednesday but the win wasn’t enough to keep them out of the relegation play-off in which they will take on Meelick next week.
Ten minutes into the second half the ‘Bridge led 0-13 to 0-11 but a strong finish from the Magpies saw them take the points. With Parteen and Ruan already through to the semi-finals this game had no bearing on the group as the ‘Bridge had already retained their status for next year.
