Injury time goal earns Newmarket dramatic win

Newmarket on Fergus 3-7
Sixmilebridge 3-6

Niki Kaiser was the heroine for Newmarket-on-Fergus on Friday night, when injury time goal, in the 61st minute, snatched victory from Sixmilebridge who had led from the 15th minute. The much-anticipated pairing of these neighbouring clubs lived up to its expectations with much at stake. Sixmilebridge had to register a win to push this group to a play-off, whereas a draw would have sufficed for Newmarket.
Newmarket started stronger and when Ruth Kaiser sent a long-range shot into the square from midfield in the seventh minute, younger sister, Niki, was on hand to gather the rebound from the ensuing scramble and finish to the net.
Áine O’Brien had the opportunity to push the Blues further in front three minutes later, but saw her free swept off course by the strong breeze favouring Sixmilebridge. Niamh McInerney accurately picked out Ciara Whelan with her puck out and Whelan passed to Naomi Carroll who cut through the Newmarket defence to goal.
Carroll added a point four minutes later to push the ‘Bridge out in front and Chloe Morey increased that lead when she converted a long range free in the 18th minute.
Newmarket were next into the attack and should have taken back the lead but for McInerney in the ’Bridge goal. She somehow managed to block the first attempt and then get to the rebound as Newmarket fought desperately to bag another goal.
Bridget O’Halloran won the next puck out for the Bridge and picked out Carroll on the far wing, who went on a run and scored her second goal of the evening. Deirdre Cassidy and Niki Kaiser added points for the Blues but the final score of the opening half fell to Morey who converted a 45 leaving the ’Bridge in front, 2-3 to 1-2.
Newmarket were on the attack from the restart and with points from Róisín McMahon and Carol O’Leary, the margin was back to two within five minutes.
A needless foul saw the ’Bridge awarded a free on the 21-yard line, and Morey blasted her shot to the roof of the net. The youngest Kaiser again came to Newmarket’s rescue when she won a free out the wing, and sent her shot sailing over the heads of the Bridge backs into the top corner to again bring the margin between the sides to two points.
Two further points from the youngster had the sides’ level by the 53rd minute. Morey converted a free and substitute Ali Quinlan put over a point from her left side to give the ’Bridge a two-point advantage with four minutes of normal time remaining. Niki Kaiser pulled back a point from a free and when Morey converted a free in the 59th minute, the Bridge had a two-point cushion.
Carol Toomey sent her puck out long to the wing and when a ground pull saw it land in the hand of Niki Kaiser, she went on a run down the line and sent a diagonal shot into the far corner of the net, edging the Blues in front for only the second time in this tense exciting encounter and ahead by the minimum margin at the final whistle.

Lyndsey got the dream start for Wolfe Tones when Linnane won the throw in and sent her shot long into the square. A poor clearance by the Scariff/Ogonnelloe backs saw Lyndsey pull on the rebound and send her shot past Fiona Myles. Rachel O’Brien added a point to give Tones a seven-point advantage with 10 minutes played.
Sarah Madden’s goal for Scariff/Ogonelloe breathed new life into the East Clare girls and when Danielle Sheedy added a point in the 42nd minute, the margin was reduced to three points.
