Inaugural Mountrivers Cup event

The inaugural Mountrivers Cup, Doonbeg Links versus Doonbeg Golf Club  competition was played recently and resulted in victory for the club team on a 12½ to 8½ score. Afterwards, captain, Kevin Hayes presented the cup to the club team captain Kevin Kenny at a social gathering in Darby’s.
The results are listed below.
Michael Waters and Michael Liddane had a 2½ to ½ win over Martin Griffin and Kevin Hayes. Wade Murphy and Seamus Dooley suffered a 0-3 loss to Paddy O’Grady and John O’Brien. Harry Crowe and Bernard Ryan halved their match with Timmy Killeen and Declan Conway. Kevin Kenny and Eddie Dwyer were 3-0 winners over Seanie Moloney and Roy Capon. Ian Kearney and Barry Murphy had a 2-1 win over Diarmaid O’Donnell and Pat Cotter. Nigel Dillon and Frank Murnane lost to Maurice Mangan and Johnny Igoe on a 2-1 scoreline while Joe Russell and Paul Faughnan were 2 ½ to ½ winners over Seamus Griffin and Pat O’Malley.
In Sunday’s singles competition, Sean Honan was the winner with 36 points from Johnny Igoe, who had a similar score.
The Christmas scramble will take place on Wednesday, December 28, while the society’s annual general meeting will take place in mid-January.
The annual general meeting of the Doonbeg Links Golf Club ladies’ section took place in the clubhouse recently. The president, Ita Mangan, reported on a very successful year both on the course and socially and congratulated the green keepers on a very fine job in keeping the course playable all year, despite some very poor weather. As the presidency is for a two-year term, Ita will remain in office for 2012.
The following officers were elected at the AGM, lady captain, Mary Arthur; secretary, Elizabeth Williams and treasurer, Helen Williams.

Ennis Seniors

Sean O’Gorman was named golfer of the year in the Ennis seniors’ section after the group’s final outing for 2011 last week.
Ennis  seniors held a three-ball modified scramble, which resulted in victory for John Guilfoyle, Sean O’Gorman and Noel Pilkington with 64 points.
They were followed by Ferdie O’Donoghue, Pat Rutherford and Eamon Corry with 63 points; Pat Cahill, Ned Ryan and Jim Hennessy, also with 63 points; Michael Nunan, Tom McGrath and Pat McInerney with 61 points; Michael Finn, Dick Herbert and Paddy Lane with 60 points and Pat Diggin, Michael Kenny and Maurice Walshe with 58 points.

Shannon

The winners of the men’s 15-hole fourball at Shannon at the weekend were Fintan Ward (8) and Batt Crowley (11) with 36 points.
Last week’s 15-hole singles competition was won by Barry Murphy (14) with 36 points from Liam Hogan (11) who had 35 points.

Dromoland

Inclement weather conditions resulted in the closure of the course over the weekend at Dromoland.
A three-ball scramble is scheduled for St Stephen’s Day. Meanwhile, names are now being taken for the upcoming winter league.

Lahinch

Mike Ryan (14) was the winner of the men’s singles Stableford competition on the championship course at Lahinch on Saturday with 38 points. In second place was Eugene Hyland (13) with 37 points.
In the men’s turkey fourball on Sunday, the winners were John (11) and Paddy Skerritt (14) with 42 points.

Spanish Point

The winner of the men’s 18-hole singles Stableford competition at Spanish Point on Sunday was Eoghan O’Loughlin (4) with 41 points from Brendan Reddan (15) who had 36 points.
There will be an open singles Stableford competition on St Stephen’s Day while the usual 18 singles continues on Fridays.

Gort

The winner of the men’s 18-hole competition at Gort at the weekend was Brendan Gantley with 37 points.
On St Stephen’s Day (Monday) there will be a singles Stableford competition with a similar competition scheduled for Tuesday next. There will be an open singles competition on Monday, January 2.
The ladies’ spring league will start on January 1 and will run until Tuesday, March 6.

Pitch and putt

At the annual general meeting of the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday, the following officers were elected: captain, Niall Reynolds; chairman, Denis McElligott; vice-chairman, Joseph McElligott; secretary, Noel Cuddihy; treasurer, Michael Kerin; competition secretary, Noel Cuddihy; registrar, Gabriel Kerin; PRO, Noel Cuddihy; juvenile officer, Kenneth Kerin;  delegates to county board, Gareth Kerin and Tony Clancy.
The award for player of the year went to Gareth Kerin while Kenneth Kerin won the master of the year title.
