Inagh-Kilnamona 1-2 Newmarket 1-7
THE race for the 2012 Clare Champion Cup got underway at the weekend with the meeting of last year’s finalists Inagh-Kilnamona and Newmarket at Kilnamona on Monday.
This time the mid-Clare club came out on top, avenging last year’s final outcome.
A strong second-half showing saw them turn a three-point half-time deficit into a five-point win.
Weather conditions were cold and wet for Monday’s game and the players also had to contend with some surface water.
The respective free-takers, Colin Ryan (Newmarket) and Niall Arthur accounted for most of the scores with Ryan firing home his side’s goal from a 20m free in the opening half as they moved to a 1-5 to 0-5 interval lead.
The Clare forward had scored his side’s first two points from play, while David Barrett also scored a brace of minors in the first half.
The home side had much the better of the second-half exchanges and they went in front when Eoin Vaughan ran on to a long delivery from Ronan O’Looney before shooting to the net. Vaughan had moved to full-forward in a switch with Cathal Lafferty shortly before that.
Points followed from Niall Arthur who finished with 0-8, Conor Tierney, Eamonn Glynn and Ger Arthur as the home side deservingly came out on top.

Crusheen 2-19 Whitegate 0-10
CRUSHEEN proved too strong for Whitegate in this Division 1A tie played at Crusheen on Monday. They put down a marker from the start with Conor O’Donnell striking 1-2 in the early minutes. Fergus Kennedy had their second goal and they led by seven points, 2-8 to 0-7 at the break having had points from Jamie Fitzgibbon, Shaun Dillon and Joe Meaney. Whitegate’s replies came from Eoin Quirke, John Minogue, Tom McNamara and Paddy Burke.
Crusheen continued to dominate in the second half adding points from Fitzgibbon, Shaun Dillon, Conor O’Donnell, Conor O’Loughlin and Meaney while Quirle replied for the East Clare outfit.
Crusheen availed of the opportunity to introduce a number of minors to senior hurling while Whitegate weren’t helped by the absence of inter county player Brendan Bugler.

CLONLARA made a winning start to their league campaign when they proved too strong for Tulla at Clonlara on Monday.
The visitors started well and took an early lead with goals from Cathal Bolton and Shane McNamara.
The home side fought their way back and helped by goals from Tomás O’Donovan and William Slattery they got on top and went on to dominate the exchanges in the second half on their way to a merited win.

Clarecastle 1-10 Cratloe 1-9
A DEREK Quinn goal inside the final five minutes gave Clarecastle a one-point win over Cratloe in this first-round tie at Clarecastle on a day when Cratloe were guilty of a dozen wides in the second half.
The visitors had marginally the better of the first half and went to the break with a two-point advantage, 0-6 to 0-4.
Cratloe missed a number of early second-half chances before Clarecastle landed a Derek Quinn free.
Midway through the half, Paudge Collins took possession from Conor McGrath and found the net. However, the misses continued and proved costly in the end. Clarecastle levelled with less than 10 minutes to go but Cratloe hit back quickly for points from Paudge Collins and McGrath to go two clear with the full-time whistle approaching.
Three minutes from the end, Jonathon Clancy, Tyrone Kierse and David Greene combined to put Derek Quinn through and he found the net. Cratloe had another wide after this, while Paudge Collins saw his effort for goal saved by Donogh Murphy.
Eric Flynn, Seanie Moloney and Patrick Kelly impressed for the winners while Liam Markham, Damian Browne and the Collins brothers did well for Cratloe.

Clooney-Quin 1-11 Sixmilebridge 0-12
A GOAL from Peter Duggan, five minutes into the second half, proved to be the decisive score in this tie played at Clooney on Bank Holiday Monday.
Throughout an evenly contested opening half, the sides traded points on a number of occasions with the home side going to the break with a one-point advantage, 0-7 to 0-6 having been level four times in the opening half.
A Pa Sheehan effort levelled again at the start of the second half before Sheehan from an line ball and Duggan swapped points again leaving it at 0-8 each.
Duggan then won possession about 50m from goal and broke past two defenders before rifling the ball to the net from 20m. Points from Caimin Morey and Niall Gilligan cut the margin to the minimum but three converted frees from Duggan had the winners four clear inside the last quarter. Gilligan and substitute Ronan Mullane pulled points back for the Bridge but the home side held on for a two-point victory.
