Impressive scoring in McCavana foursomes

A total of 32 pairs qualified for the McCavana foursomes last weekend at Shannon when scoring was impressive with 74 nett been the final qualifier.

At the drive in at Woodstock Golf Club were James Meade, President, Eugene Phillips and Margaret Ann Killeen, captains and Donal Kenny, seniors captain.This weekend the season starts with The Tradaree Cup strokeplay competition. This will be played over three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and a big turnout is expected.
On Monday there will be an open team of four competition.

Kilrush
The winners of the ladies’ seniors outing at Kilrush last week were Marion Brennan, Mary Keating and Anne Cooper from Anne McMahon, Carmel Lillis and Marion Brennan. Third place was filled by Claire Pyne, Bernadette Eastham and Lucy Blake.
In the men’s seniors outing last week the winners were Jimmy McSwiggan, Leo Harvey, Murt Collins and John Grant from TJ Lyons, John Stapleton, Paddy Carmody and Barry Taylor with third spot filled by Tom O’Dea, Sean Moran and Billy Clarke.
There will be a men’s singles competition this Sunday with a mixed scramble on Bank Holiday Monday. The draw will take place at 2.30pm.

Lahinch
Michael A Lynch (11) was the winner in Saturday’s monthly medal at Lahinch Championship Course with 65 nett from Jonathan Keane (17) on 68 and Leonard Shanahan (7) with 71. The gross was won by Michael Hennessy with 77.

Spanish Point
The winner of the Tuesday seniors at Spanish Point last week was John Fitzgerald with 39 points from James Forde on 35. Despite very cold and wintry conditions, the 18-hole singles Stableford last weekend was won by Noel McMahon with a score of 34 points, winning on the back nine from Eoghan O’Loughlin who had a similar score.
This weekend sees members battle for the Martin Talty Cup, an 18-hole singles competition. On Bank Holiday Monday all golfers are invited to play in an open singles 9-hole re-entry.
The panel sheets are also up in the men’s locker room for the Pierce Purcell and Towns Cup inter-club competitions and any members interested in representing the club this year are encouraged to contact the relevant captains.

Woodstock
Entries are now being accepted for the Kelleher trophy, a foursomes matchplay competition, at Woodstock and the closing date is Monday April 1.
The captain’s drive in took place on Sunday and a nine-hole scramble took place afterwards. The front nine winners were Martin Dormer, Teresa Sherlock, Bernardo Kelly and Seamus Kelly, while the back nine winners were Adrian Kearney, Eugene Quinn, Ramona Gleeson and Ann Coote. The winner of the weekend club singles was Edward Casey (14) with 44 points.
In week four of the spring league, the fourball better ball winners were Rory Callinan (11) and Mark Torpey (18) with 45 points from James McMahon (11) and Tommy Flynn (17) who had a similar score.

Woodstock seniors
Woodstock Senior’s held a team of three modified scramble over 14 holes on Wednesday. The winners, with 46 points, were Tony McInerney, Olie McNamara and Willie Thompson.

Ennis

A total of 87 members teed off in the Ennis Seniors Group three-ball modified scramble last week. In first place, with 80-points, were Michael Kenny, Mike Butler and John Guilfoyle. They were followed by Luke Coote, Jim Scully and Bernie Hoey on 78. In third spot were Sean O’Gorman, Sean Finnerty and Jimmy McNamara, also on 78 followed by Pat Cahill, Joe Dilleen and Pat McInerney on 78, David Timlin, Tom Fox and Michael Carmody on 76 with sixth spot filled by Seamus Hanrahan, Jim Felle and Pat Rutherford on 76.
In the weekly club competition, a men’s 18-hole fourball competition, the winners were Eamonn Kelly and Ger Hanrahan with 45 points from Gerry Bredin and Jim Casey, who had a similar score. In third spot were Gerry O’Connor and James Horgan with 44 followed by Tom Gallery and Andrew McGloin with 44 with fifth spot filled by Kieran Ryan and Enda Heaney and they had 43 points.

Gort
In the men’s 18-hole singles competition at Gort at the weekend, the winner was Andy Murphy (19) with 39 points from Brendan Gantley (12) with 38, John Walsh (24) with 38 and Mattie Larkin (11) with 37 points. The gross was won by Enda Cradock (scratch) with 36 points.
In the 18-hole Monday singles the winner was Ian Price (16) with 41 points from Brian Murtagh (8) with 40 points.
This weekend there will be an 18-hole singles Stableford competition on Saturday and Sunday while the weekly open singles will continue on Monday.
The ladies spring league is ongoing and the final is set for Sunday, March 24.

Doonbeg
Diarmaid O’Donnell was the winner of Sunday’s semi open singles at Doonbeg Links with 37 points followed by David Eastham with 34 and Martin Griffin with 32. 
Padraig Hayes was the winner of the singles on the previous Sunday with 42 points followed by Diarmaid O’Donnell with 40 and Martin Griffin in with 39.
The open fourball and singles competition will commence on this Thursday and run through to March 24
The next club competition will be on March 24 when the format will be a semi-open fourball. 

Dromoland
In the 18-hole singles Stableford competition at Dromoland at the weekend, Pat Reale was the winner with 39 points from David McLoughlin who had a similar score. Brian Sheedy was third with 37 points.
The winners of the ladies winter league are Mary Arthur, Sheila Kent, Dervla O’Neill, Anne Murphy, Sheila Ryan and Corola Wixted with 385pts from Sandy Smyth, Mary O’Donnell O’Brien, Maeve McMahon, Annette Ryan, Ursula McManus and Anne O’Toole with 384 points. In third place were Joan Ryan, Cora O’Toole, Maria Nolan, Mary Keane, Dolores Fox and Laura Haugh, also with 384 points.
The winner of the lady seniors competition was Ber McDermott.

Sixmilebridge
Aidan Whelan was the winner of the Sixmilebridge Society outing last week to Woodstock. Colin Murphy was second with Shane Chaplin in third spot. The nines were won by Mervyn Frazer and Fergie Cooney, while the category prize winners were Richard Flynn and Richard Hayes.

Mid-West Alliance
Last week’s outing at Dromoland resulted in Daniel Brennan (3) from Shannon winning the gross with 74 from Ian Colleran (PGA) with a similar score. They were followed by Mark McGrath (3), Limerick with 76 and Tony Cleary (+1) also with 76.
In the nett category, the winner was John Hayes (7), Charleville with 63 from Liam Pyne (6) Ennis on 75 and David Casey (9) Dromoland on 76
In the nearest the pin competition, David Casey won at the 7th, David O’Connor at the 13th and Ian Colleran at the 17th.
John Hayes, with six, won the most birdies competition.
In the overall gross (best four cards from five), Tony Cleary Dromoland won from Daniel Brennan, with Ian Colleran third and Mark McGrath in fourth spot.
David Casey won the overall nett (best four cards from five) from Joey Shire (6), Adare, Liam Pyne and Pat Lucey (7), Ennis.

Kilkee
After week one of the spring league at Kilkee the joint leaders are Jimmy Murray (10), Pat Harte (14), John Ryan (16), L Owens (18) P O’Brien (22) and M Grady (33).
In second place are M Mullane (9) K O’Connor (15) M Miniter (17) J Leyden (17) A O’Flynn (20) J Eakins (24).

Clarecastle
Clarecastle Society will hold their first outing of 2013 at Galway Bay GC on this Saturday, March 16. First tee has been reserved from 10am and members and guests intending to play should text 086 3246015 with their preferred tee time.
At a well attended AGM the following officers were elected for the 2013-2014 term: James Murtagh (captain), Noel Connellan (president), PJ Garry (secretary), John Casey (treasurer), John McEntee (assistant treasurer), Mike Foley (PRO) and Bernard Hanrahan (assistant PRO). Joe Green and Liam Barry (ex-officio). John Meere, Paschal Russell and Niall McMahon were also elected to the committee.

East Clare
The winners of the men’s fourball at East Clare at the weekend were Paul Madden (15) and Martin Mason (17) with 47 points.
Last week’s senior men’s outing was won by Ted Harrington, John Fielding and John Fahy from Tony McNulty, Jackie McHugh and Steve Symes with third spot filled by Vinny Hinchy, Pat Browne and Kieran Gibbons.
In the ladies seniors competition, the winners were Marie Moloney, Noreen Ryan and Hannah Guinnane from Pat Williams, Louise Delaney and Mary Brennan.
This weekend the men’s club are holding their first 18-hole singles stroke competition of the season.
The last day for entering scores in the winter league is this Friday March 15.
In the ladies team of two competition, the winners were Catherine Murphy and Margaret MacNamara from Fiona and Joan Kinsella.

Portumna
In the men’s 14-hole competition at Portumna at the weekend, Basil Kennedy (7) won the 0-10 category with 27 points. The other prizewinners were: 11–14 – Sean McEntee (13) 29 points; 15–18 – Philip Harte (15) 29 points; 19+ – Martin McDonagh (23) 34 points; seniors – Tony Coen (20) – 35 points.
In the ladies 14-hole competition, the winner was Lily Graydon with 32 points from Mary McElroy 32 points.
The winners in the spring league are Carmel McLaughlin, Mary M Madden, Mary McElroy, Catherine Dunne, and Bernie Kilmartin with 371 points from Suzanne Corcoran, Kathleen Lynch, Brid Kelly, Lillian Austin and Mary Nevin with 354 points. The best individual score came from Mary McElroy with 125 points.
The club open 3-ball continues until April.

 

PITCH AND PUTT

New Clare board elected
At the recent Clare Pitch and Putt Association AGM the following members were elected to the County Board for 2013: chairperson, Helen Daly; vice-chairperson, Martin Walsh; secretary, Niall Seery; competition secretary, Niall Reynolds; assistant competition secretaries, Ger Hanrahan and Michael Kerin; treasurer, Michael Murphy; registrar, Christy Riordan; PRO, Declan Sheedy.
As clubs are encouraged to ensure that delegates from each club are in attendance at all county board meetings scheduled for the year.

Clare Cups at Doolin
The first of this year’s Clare County Board pitch and putt competitions takes place on Sunday, March 24, in Doolin where the Clare Cups will be played for.
This will be a 36-hole open competition with tee times between 10am-12 noon. There will be an overall first prize along with category prizes for senior, intermediate, junior and ladies grades on offer.
