‘Idle’ land ideal for Shannon Bank scouts, says councillor

CLARE County Council has been asked to gift a portion of the unused land, fenced within the boundary of the Shannon Banks sewage treatment plant compound, to a local scout troop.

Councillor Cathal Crowe made this request at a recent Killaloe Electoral Area meeting, where he outlined that this land would benefit the Shannon Banks Scout Troop.
He claimed the land was of very little value to the council and said it would effectively involve moving the existing boundary fence.
However, senior executive engineer, Seán Lenihan stressed it was not just simply a case of the council moving the boundary fence, as all of the land wasn’t under their control.
Following a recent site inspection, Mr Lenihan acknowledged there was merit in the proposal being put forward and was anxious to advance it once he had all the information at his disposal. He noted members would be aware that the Shannon Banks Pumping Station was part of the O&M contract pertaining to the Limerick Main Drainage (LMD) scheme.
“I have spoken to my colleagues in Limerick City Council and am advised that Severn & Trent/Response (STR) are the company currently involved. I am identifying the extent of lands under their control there and will revert to the council when further information is to hand.
“If the area of ground there is surplus to the Limerick Main Drainage requirement then I would be happy to recommend the sale/lease of same to the scout movement subject to the normal procedures in this regard,” he said.
