Husband and wife enjoy victories at East Clare club

It was a great weekend for husband and wife John and Noreen Doyle, as they each won their respective club competitions at East Clare.

In a men’s golfer-of-the-year competition on Sunday, John (23) was the winner with 44 points from Darren Rosney (12) with 43 points and Richard Hayes (19) with 42 points. In the yellow markers competition, the winner was Richard Cullen (21) with 44 points.

The winners in the men’s seniors competition last week were Jim Greene, John Brett and Jackie McHugh from Charles Stuart, Paddy Carney and Paddy Moloney, with third spot filled by Flan Mullane, Dave Condren and Eamon Long.

The ladies’ flag competition was won by Noreen Doyle from Mary Beatty, with third spot filled by Joan Kinsella.
This weekend the men’s club have an 18-hole singles.

Shannon

In the open singles Stableford competition at Shannon on Friday, the winner was Ian Fox with 39 points from Michael P Hickey on the same score with Paul McElligott in third spot with 37 points. Pádraig Cahilane won the gross with 29 points.

The winner of Saturday’s open singles was Gerard Sheehan, also with 39 points, from John Garry with a similar score, Ronan Hynds with 38, John  O’Donnell with 37 and Donal Walsh with 37. Jason O’Donnell won the gross with 34 points.

The winner of the Easter Sunday open singles was Ricardo Pino with 39 points from Pat McCarthy with 38, Gavin O’Donnell with 37 and Raymond Hehir with 36 while Ed Hickey won the gross with 31.

In the modified scramble last week, the winners were Tom O’Brien, Pat Cassidy, Fergus Murphy and Maurice O’Connor with 56 points from Pat Griffin, Nick Hawes, Denis Bartley and John O’Connor with 55 points. In third spot, also with 55 points, were John McPhillips, John Kelly, Gavin McPhillips and Darren Ryan.      

Kilrush
In the ladies’ seniors outing at Kilrush last week, the winners were Margaret Clune, Mary McNamara and Claire Pyne from Anne McMahon, Dolores Reidy and Bernadette Eastham, with third spot filled by Margaret Griffin, Kathleen Haugh and Agnes Shannon.

The prizewinners in the men’s seniors outing were John Robinson, Seamus O’Doherty and Maurice Roche from T J Lyons, Bill Murphy and Brendan McNamara, with third spot filled by Tom Prendiville, Noel Thornton and Pierce Cooper.

In last Thursday’s ladies’ singles, the winner was Mary Young (20) with 27 points from Mary O’Sullivan (21) with a similar score. In third spot with 26 points was Anne Cooper (36) followed by Geraldine Burke (20) with 26 points and Anne Brennan (11) with 26 points.

In the weekend’s men’s singles the winner was club vice-captain Finbarr McMahon with 39 points from James Murtagh on 36 points. The entry sheet for the Paddy Shannon men’s matchplay (handicap 18+) is now available.

This weekend, there will be a men’s singles with re-entry while the ladies will have a singles competition on Saturday and again next Thursday.

 

Spanish Point
The winner of the weekly Tuesday seniors open at Spanish Point was Len Wilson with a score of 30 points in very tough conditions. The winner of the weekend singles Stableford competition was Anthony Garrihy with 41 points from Michael O’Brien with 38 points and Ross Burke with 36 points.

This weekend, there is an 18-hole singles Stableford competition while a quadrangular match involving Spanish Point, Kilrush, Kilkee and Lahinch is on at the Castle Course Lahinch. The Friday evening scrambles will be starting up soon and trials have started for all inter-club competitions. The Gathering event on the June bank holiday weekend is also gaining momentum and enquiries should be directed to the clubhouse on 065 7084198 or Fergal Hehir or Denis Gallery.

Woodstock

In the club singles, the winner was Joe Casey (16) with 42 points from Aaron Donegan (10) with 41 points and Nicky Ryan (7) with 40 points.

Portumna

In the men’s singles Stableford competition at Portumna at the weekend the winner was John Coughlan (18) with 38 points from Kevin Kelly (10) with 37 points, Adrian Whyte (17) with 37 points and Sean Whelan (12) with 36 points. The gross was won by John Cleary (4) with 30 points.

In the ladies’ competition, the winner was Marie Kelly with 40 points from Mary McDonagh on 36 and Kathleen Lynch on 35. This Sunday, the competition will be the ladies and gents’ centenary medal competition, which is an 18-hole singles stroke event.

Lahinch

The winners of the Tommy Skerritt Trophy played on Saturday was Danny McMenamin (Donegal) and Bill Frazer (Lahinch) with 43 points. The first leg of the Friendship Trophy was played on Sunday and Lahinch carry a winning lead of seven to four over Donegal into the away leg in Donegal, to be played on the club’s visit to Donegal at the end of September. It is the 31st year of the association and it goes from strength to strength.

The winners of Australian Spoons ladies’ competition were Mary Sadlier (11) and Jenny Cagney (15) with 35 points.

Gort

The men’s competition at Gort at the weekend was the subscription stakes and the winner of the golfer-of-the-year event was Kieran Cullinane (14) with 42 points from John Rodgers (8) with 40 points with John O’Donoghue (12) in third spot with 40 points followed by Bernard Byrne (16) with 40 points. David Quirke (4) won the gross with 32 points.

The Monday open was won by John Skehill (15) with 40 points from Tony Kenny (9) with 37 points and Brendan Kearney (21) with 36 points. The gross was won by Stephen Cunniffe (5) with 32 points.

There will be a men’s singles competition this weekend. 

In the ladies’ subscription stakes competition, the winner was Anne Kerins (22) with 67 from Margaret McMahon (28) with a similar score, with third spot filled by Maureen Brennan (19) with 69. Siobhán O’Connor (10) won the gross with 83.

The winner of last week’s ladies’ singles Stableford was Gabrielle Warnock (23) with 39 points from Siobhán Forde (1) with 35 points and Maureen Brennan (19) with 34 points.  In the Monday open, Helen McGourty (36) was the winner with 34 points.

Dromoland

The winner of the Dromoland ladies’ singles Stableford competition  at Dromoland on Sunday was Kitty Quinn with 33 points from Maureen McKeogh with 32 points with Joan Ryan in third spot on 31 points.

In the men’s singles v par competition, the winner was Ray Boyce with five up from Alan Larkin, Declan Colleran and Seamus Mungovan, all with two up. The junior winner was Dale Foley with three up.

The men’s golfer-of-the-year competitions for 2013 are now displayed on the club notice boards.
The men’s competition this weekend will be a club foursomes.

Kilkee

In week five of the spring league at Kilkee, the winners were Mike Mullane, Kevin O’Connor, Michael Miniter, Jim Leyden, Andrew O’Flynn and Joan Eakins with 495 points. They were followed by Jimmy Murray, Pat Harte, John Ryan, Len Owens Phil O’Brien and Maura Grady with 479 points.  The best individual score was returned by Ger O’Flynn (12) 37 points.

Ennistymon VS

This Saturday, Ennistymon Vocational School will hold its annual golf classic at the Castle Course, Lahinch. 

The proceeds from the event will go towards the running and maintenance of the school for the 2013/2014 academic year.

There will be a trophy for the best man and best woman on the day.  There will also be prizes for the longest drive and closest to the pin. 

Sixmilebridge

Sixmilebridge Golf Society had an outing to Portumna last week, when the winner was Colin Murphy from Dessie McDermott with Vinny Purcell in third place.

The nines were won by Kevin Meehan and Richard Flynn while the category prizes were won by John Chaplin and Aidan Whelan.

Lissycasey GAA

Lissycasey GAA will hold its annual team-of-four classic at Kilrush on Saturday, May 18, with some times also available on Friday, May 17. Tee times can be booked through Declan Kelly at 086 8540652 or Robert McMahon at 086 3347768.

Pitch and Putt

The winners of the two-ball scramble held last Sunday at the Cill Na Móna Pitch and Putt Club were Mary Murphy and Willie Perkins. This week’s competition will be held on Friday, with a tee-off time of 6.30pm.
The winner of the competition at the Clare Road on Sunday was Gerry Kierce from Michael Kerin, with Declan Sheedy winning the gross.
