High-scoring in president’s prize at Ennis

THERE was a big turnout for the president’s (Michael Vaughan) prize at Ennis at the weekend when the winner was Peter Daly with 42 points.
He had three to spare over Michael Carmody with Michael Barry, also on 39 points, in third spot. They were followed by Martin O’Neill, Richard O’Connell and Gerry Gilligan, all with 38 points. The gross was won by Jarlath O’Halloran with 32 points from Noel Pyne on 29 points.
Michael Connolly won the past president’s prize with 30 points, while the category winners were Colum Devine with 36 points, Patrick Whelan with 36 points and Matt Flynn with 35 points. Donal Vaughan won the guest’s prize.
In the ladies’ section, the winner was Imelda Colleran with 35 points from Pamela Murphy with 34 points, Kathleen Frehill with 33 points, Claire Kenneally with 32 points and Mary Walshe with 32 points. Sarah Cunningham won the gross, while the nines were won by Cora Kerins with 20 points and Elaine Kelly with 19 points.
Ennis seniors held a three-ball modified scramble last week when the winners, with 73 points, were Val Bredin, Michael Carmody and Eamon Murphy from Michael Connolly, Michael Cummins and Michael Kenny on 72. In third spot were Dick Burke, PP Cahill and Pat Shannon on 70 followed by Paul Mockler, Brian Warner and Michael Nunan on 70. In fifth spot on 69 were Tony Kehoe, Bill Leacy and Johnny Stack followed by Andy Cregan, Cyril Brennan and Tom Greene on 68.
Meanwhile, the second leg of the final of the JB Carr competition between Ennis and Kenmare was cancelled last week due to inclement weather conditions. Ennis hold a 4-1 lead after the first leg, which was played in Ennis.

Lahinch
JIM (16) and Ina (14) Nolan won the O’Neill Cup, a scotch foursomes Stableford competition at Lahinch last week with 40 points. Kevin (17) and Una Molony (31) were second with a similar score followed by David (18) and Mary O’Brien (21) and they also had 40 points as had fourth placed Kieran (3) and Aoibhinn Maher (30). Michael Vaughan and Jenny Hennessy won the gross with 32 points.
Siobhán Conway (10) and Rose Doyle (13) won the ladies’ fourball Stableford competition on the Castle Course with 41 points.
In the Lady Harley Cup, a singles Stableford competition for ladies on the championship course, the winner was Rachel Maher (19) with 40 points from Rose Doyle (13) with 38 points and Jacqueline Joyce (12) with 38 points. Sinéad Sexton won the gross with 36 points. Angela Cullinan (11) won the silver category with 38 points, while Suzanne Hassett (26) was the winner of the bronze section with 37 points.
The winners of the men’s aggregate fourball on the Castle Course were Michael F Hanrahan (6) and Des Hanrahan (16) with 75 points.
The team rumble on the Castle Course in aid of the Ennistymon Chernobyl project was won by Willie Moore (12), Tom Greene (22) and John Lennon (9) with 71 points. They had six to spare over Des (21), Brenda (20) and Shona Fitzgerald (18).
The men’s singles competition for the Bogberry Cup was won by Barry Dunworth (18) with 40 points from Michael Duffy (10) with a similar score. Peter Clooney (12) was third with 38 points followed by Liam Dalton (12) with 37 points. Eoin Doohan won the gross with 30 points.
On Friday, the ladies’ fourball v par competition was won by Gema Ayuso (18) and Una McCarthy (15) with four-up from Gráinne Hennessy (14) and Miriam Hillery (21) with a similar score. In third place on three-up were Nollie McCarthy (20) and Catherine McKenna (18), while the gross was won by Olivia Lucas and Áine O’Brien with six-down.
In a similar competition for the men, the winners were club captain Ray Hennessy (3) and David Conway (3) with eight-up from Liam Whitney (12) and Ollie Mescall (16) with five-up.
The competition on Saturday on the Castle Course was a men’s fourball Stableford and the winners were Micheál Duffy (7) and John Conway (12) with 44 points from Jimmy Doyle (12) and Richard Meaney (15) with a similar s core. In third place, also with 44 points, were Shane Duggan (10) and Frank Keane (11).
The Nancy Connole Trophy, a ladies’ singles Stableford event, was played for on Saturday on the championship course. Sinéad Sexton (2) emerged as the winner with 39 points from Jacqueline Joyce (12) with 37 points and Evelyn Lyons (22) with a similar score. Jenny Hennessy won the gross with 31 points.
In the silver category, Barbara McEvoy (15) was the winner with 36 points from Gema Maria Ayuso (18) with 35 and Aedin McCarthy (13) with 34.
Liz O’Driscoll (21) won the bronze category with 34 points from Miriam Hillery (21) with a similar s core and Suzanne Hassett (26) with 32.
A club classic development team of four was the competition on Sunday when the winners were Jenny Hennessy, Niamh Whelan, Angela Cullinan and Connie Fahy with 89 points. They won from Willie Moore, Pat Duggan, John Ryan and Liam Hynes who had a similar score. In third spot on 87 points were Shane and Claire Duggan, Sinéad Sexton and Frank Keane.
In a similar competition on the Castle Course, the winners were Kevin, Mary, Marese and Eoghan Mannion with 99 points from Richard Walsh, Ian Bolger, Kieran Maher and Harry Fehily with 93 points.
On the championship course, the prize for nearest the pin was won by Brian McCarthy on the 16th with Mark Power winning the long drive on the 15th. Similar competitions for the ladies were won by Jenny White (nearest the pin and long drive).
On the Castle Course, Michael Harty won the men’s nearest-the-pin prize, while Declan McInerney won the long drive, while the ladies’ long drive was won by Mary O’Brien.

Shannon
THE president’s (Kevin Hehir) prize was played for at Shannon at the weekend and there was a great contest for the title.
Michael Mulqueen emerged as the winner from Eamonn Fanneran, both scoring 42 points. Mike Deasy was third a point behind and they was followed by Kevin Moylan, Noel O’Loughlin, Jason Hogan, Dean McDarby, Tom Kiely, all with 40 points, Brendan Foley, Ricardo Pino, John Mooney and Daniel Moore, all with 39 points. Ed Hickey won the gross with 33 points from Jamie O’Shea on a similar score. Liam Fitzgerald won the past president’s prize with 36 points and the guest’s prize was won by Daithi O’Connell with 33 points.
In the ladies’ section, the winner was Margaret Hope with 73 nett from Bridget McCaul with 75, Jyoti Patel with 77, Rose Doyle with 77 and Anne Jones with 77. Naoimh McMahon won the gross with 82.

Spanish Point
LAST Sunday, the club’s Munster Country Clubs team travelled to Lismore in Waterford to take on Castlgregory in the semi-final of this year’s championship and won by 4.5 matches to 2.5 matches.
They then met Frankfield from Cork in the final. This proved to be a very close match and with the scores level at three games each, the result was decided in the final game, on the 18th hole when local man Kevin Hynes won a very tight game to secure the Cup for the Club for the first time since it was last won in 2002.
The local panel for the final stages was, Brian O’Loughlin, Mervin Hehir, Fergal Hehir, Michael O’Brien, Ross Burke, Micheál Hehir, Brendan McCarthy, Kevin Hynes, Micheál Talty, Eric Murrihy. They were managed by Martin Glenny and Noel Connellan.
On Saturday 11, the club hosted the second playing of the Mocad Trophy, which is for Munster clubs with less than 18 holes played as a team of four from the different categories and twelve clubs took part. With three cards to count Ringenane from Cork were the winners with 104 points followed by the local team on 100 points and Templemore were third with 97 points.
A big entry took part in the open singles on Bank Holiday Monday and David Stapleton (17) from Athenry was the winner with 41 points.
Fergal Hehir was the winner of the Dan Gallery Cup, club match play when he defeated Ross Burke by 3/2. The Friday open was won by Joe O’Rourke (12) with 35 points while the 18-hole singles on Sunday was won by Michael Hillery (14) 37 points from Michael O’Gorman (26) 36 points.
In the senior open Terry Molloy (16) won with 45 points. Last Friday’s open was won by Cathal Whelan (5) 35 points from Brendan McCarthy (9) 33 points.
The winners of the weekend rumble were Joe O’Rourke (12), Paidi McGough (12), JJ Skerritt (11) and Michael Hillery (13) with 63 points.
The captain’s (Noel McMahon) prize takes place on this Friday and Saturday in 18-hole stroke format and timesheets are in the clubhouse. Members should note the club’s annual fund raising open competition is now fixed for September 1 and 2.

Kilrush
DOLORES Reidy won last Thursday’s ladies’ singles at Kilrush with 36 points from Mary Young, Mary McCarthy and Geraldine Burke all with 35.
The winners of the president’s mixed on Friday were Jim Young Senior and Mary Bolton from Brian Scanlan and Maeve Murphy with third spot filled by Oliver McNamara and Muriel Kiely followed by Ray Keogh and Margaret Donnelly. Liam Williams and Mary McNamara won the gross.
Michael Coghlan (17) won the Hospital Cup, a men’s singles Stableford competition, on Sunday with 39 points from Jim Young Senior (6) with 38 points and Finbarr McMahon (15) with a similar score.
The category winners were Declan O’Donovan (9) with 38 points, Gearóid Williams (13) with 38 points and Des Murphy (23) with 36 points.
The final of the Glynn Cup, a men’s fourball matchplay, took place recently. The winners were Jim Young Senior and Michael O’Reilly, who beat Tom Coffey and Michael Hemmings in the final.
The president’s prize (Jimmy McSwiggan) will take place this Saturday. The presentation of prizes will take place on Saturday night.
The ESB Inaugural Cup Men’s Open Singles Stableford will take place this Sunday.
There will be a ladies’ singles next Thursday. Timesheets for all competitions are available in the bar.

Dromoland
THE men’s weekend single Stableford competition at Dromoland was won by Sean Myatt with 40 points from Hugh O’Neill with a similar score with third spot filled by Pat Reale with 36 points. The junior section was won by Danny Mungovan.
This weekend’s men’s competition will be the monthly medal.
The mixed foursomes team won the Munster final against Newcastle West Golf Club in Youghal on Saturday.
Dromoland’s  senior and junior scratch cups were played for on Sunday The senior competition was over 36 holes and the winner was Sean Barry, Muskerry (79,76), with 155 from Tony Cleary, Dromoland (77,78) with a similar score. They were a shot ahead of Dave O’Donavan, Muskerry (75, 81), followed by Daniel Brennan, Dromoland/Shannon (81,77) on 158.
In the junior scratch cup, the winner was Sean Myatt, Dromoland, with 75 from Bobby Deegan, Dromoland, on 78, Seamus Cusack, Dromoland, on 78 and Patrick Dineen Mallow G on 79.

Kilkee
THE lady captain’s (Irene Neylon) prize, was played for at Kilkee at the weekend when the winner was Gay Callaghan (33) with 64 from  Sheila Clancy (30) 68, Phil O’Brien (22) with 70,  Pam O’Sullivan (29) with 71, Mairéad Mannix (19) with 72 and Angela O’Connell (17) with 72, the gross was won by Ann Boyle (14).
In the development club classic, the winners were Jimmy Murray, George Roche, Kevin O’Connor and Paddy McInerney with 102 points from  Eddie Fahy, Pat Carey, Pat Murphy and Chris Clancy on 99. In third spot were Mike Mullane, Ger O’Flynn, Neil Higgins and Tom Carr on 98.

Woodstock
WOODSTOCK hosted their scratch cup competitions at the weekend and there was keen competition.
In the junior competition, the winner was Keith Farr (6) from the host club with 79 gross, while the nett section was won by Danny McGrath (7) from Tuam with 73.
In the intermediate competition, Pat Solan (13) was the winner with 79, while the nett category was won by Frank McEnery (16) with 64.
Peter Cosgrove (19) won the minor competition with 93 with the nett won by Daniel Dillon (20 with 74.
Meanwhile, in the weekly seniors’ competition, the three-ball scramble, played over 16 holes, was won by Michael Cullinan, Liam Cahir and Pat Quinn.

Portumna
THE winner of the men’s 18-hole competition at Portumna at the weekend was John Hynes (19) with 43 points from Leo Kelly (10), Andrew McCarthy (12) and Gary Connor (16) all with 40 points. The gross was won by JP McLoughlin (1) with 39 points.
In the Monday open singles, the winner was Brendan Foley (10), East Clare, with 44 points from Ronan Madden (13) with 39 points and Franny Quinn (10) with 38 points. The gross was won by JP McLoughlin (Senior) with 34 points.
In the ladies’ 18-hole stroke competition, the winner was Geraldine Feeney (20) with 74 from Pauline McEvoy (25) with 78.

Gort
IN the open singles at Gort last week, the winner was Colm Beakey (14) with 40 points from Philip McInerney (12) with 39 points and Paul Conlon (16) with 36 points. The gross was won by Barry Cahill (11) with 27 points.
This weekend, the president’s (Pat Cradock) final will take place followed by the presentation and buffet. There will be an 18-hole singles competition at the weekend and the weekly open continues on Monday.
In the ladies’ 18-hole scotch foursomes last week, the winners were Mary Geoghegan and Christina Daly with 38 points from Siobhán Forde and Róisín Walsh with 36.
The ladies will also play for the president’s prize this weekend.

East Clare
IN the men’s 18-hole stroke competition at East Clare, the winner was Sean Jones (20) with 65 nett from Kevin Wallis (12) with 66 nett and Daire Brady (5) 68 nett. The Stableford winner was Jack Manly with 38 points.
In the ladies’ golfer-of-the-year competition, the winner was Eileen Donnellan with 66 nett from Sheena Mannion with 67 nett. The category winners were Leslie O’Flynn, 71 nett; Brigid Minogue, 73 nett and Deirdre Cooney with 76 nett.
The Friday scramble winners were Jim Greene, Brigid Minogue and Catherine Minogue.
This weekend, the president’s (Peg Hanrahan) prize will be played for.

Representing Munster
CIARA Magill and Tara Whelan (both East Clare) and Lisa O’Shea (Shannon) are members of the Munster team for this week’s girls’ inter-provincial championship at Ballinrobe.
The competition got underway on Wednesday and continues for two days. Magill is a survivor from last year, while O’Shea is a member of the high-performance squad.
Ulster are chasing an eighth successive title.
The format sees eight singles matches played in the round-robin series, over two days. The selection criteria for this event requires that each team must include a minimum of three players who are under 15 years of age, while a player who has played for the senior inter-provincial side in the same year is not eligible.

Clare Soccer
THE Clare Soccer League will hold a fundraising classic on this Friday and Saturday at Woodstock as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations. There are still some tee times available and anyone interested in playing should contact Mike McInerney on 087 2038479.

Pitch and Putt
KEVIN Woods was the overall winner of the captain’s (Niall Reynolds) day at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday. Tommy Kelly was second followed by Niall Seery. Gerry Kierce won the nett, while the gross was won by Marty Fawl. Michael Kerin won the prize for the best final 18. Paddy Sheedy and Billy Griffin recorded holes-in-one, while PJ Considine won the prize for nearest the pin.
The nett scramble was won by Kenneth Kerin, Kevin Woods and Gerry Kierse, while Niall Seery, Declan Sheedy and PJ Considine won the gross.
Helen Daly won the ladies’ section with the visitor’s prize going to Ger Hanrahan.
