Great art at its heart

In the case of the art competition, the competitors had three hours, under supervision, to paint, draw, sketch or collage any Community Games activity. For the model making, competitors had three hours to create a model out of any material that had to have a Community Games theme.
The adjudication in both cases was based on observation of events, creativity, originality and natural ability. Special category competitors also took part in this year’s finals.
The following who represented Clare at the national finals last year were winners again in their respective age category. In art, Caoimhe Roughan, Ruan won the U-12, Natasha Coughlan, Quin-Clooney won the U-16, while in model making, Lauren McConway, Quin-Clooney, won the U-14 category.
Ten areas will represent Clare at the national finals with Sixmilebridge-Kilmurry and Shannon each having four. Quin-Clooney will have two with Cratloe, Clarecastle-Ballyea, Doora-Barefield, Kilkishen-O’Callaghan’s Mills-Oatfield, Tulla, Ruan and An Droichead each having one.
The judges, Clodagh Kelly and Louise Houlihan, had a difficult time selecting winners as the standard was extremely high.
The county co-ordinator, Cecilia O’Sullivan, congratulated all the competitors for their efforts and participation and wished the winners success at the national finals in Athlone in May. She thanked the judges and all the supervisors who helped to run off the competition, the area secretaries and teachers who promoted it locally, and Brother De Róiste, principal of Ennis CBS, for the use of the school.
The prizes will be presented to the area secretaries and delegates at the next county meeting at the West County Hotel, Ennis, on Tuesday, March 6, at 9pm.
