Good scoring at Lahinch competition

Lahinch hosted a team-of-four competition on both courses on Sunday. On the championship course, the winners with 90 points were Ray Hennessy, Paddy Coleman, Robert Hanrahan and Bob Loftus from Gráinne Hennessy, Jean Basheer, Stephen Henessy and Ronan Murphy with 88 points. In third spot with 87 points were Billy and Nance Casey, Tom and Elaine Doyle.
Meanwhile, on the Castle Course, the winners with 100 points were Martin Clohessy, John Shannon, Michael Howley and Michael McDonagh from Michael Whelan, Paddy and Theresa O’Brien and Bridie Whelan, with 96 points.
Last week’s ladies’ turkey competition was won by Jenny Cagney (14) and Patricia Ramsey (22).
Michael O’Connor (17), Woodstock was the winner of Wednesday’s open singles on the Castle Course with 38 points.
Thursday’s open singles on the championship course was won by Frank Considine (11) with 34 points from Vivien Killeen (9) on a similar score. Shay Leonard (13) from Lucan was third with 34 points while the gross was won by Alan King, Bettystown, with 25 points.
In the ladies’ open singles on the same day Dympna Walsh (22) from Laytown and Bettystown was the winner with 36 points.
Saturday’s men’s singles was won by Tommy Malone (3) with 34 points, from Hilary Haydon (14) with 32 points and Kevin O’Donovan (13) with 32 points. Liam D’Alton won the gross with 22 points.
On Bank Holiday Monday, there was a men’s turkey fourball v par on the championship course and the winners were John (13) and Sean Murphy (13) with four up.
In a ladies’ turkey singles on Monday, Elaine Doyle (19) was the winner with 32 points from Valerie Shannon (7) with 31 points and Geraldine Ryan (16) with 30 points. Mary Sadlier won the gross with 21 points.

Ennis
Last week, Ennis Seniors held a team-of-four competition when the winners, with 75 points, were Colm McNevin, Sean O’Gorman, Dick Pyne, and Frank Coffey from Charlie McEnery, Ollie Kenneally, Johnny Cullinan and Tony Blake with 73. In third spot with 71 points were Tom Pender, Tony Coote, JJ Coyne and Tom Fox followed by Peadar Cosgrove, Jimmy McNamara, Michael Torpey and Conor Murphy with 71. In fifth spot with 70 points were Michael Considine, Sean Fitzpatrick, Frank Landy and R Pyne followed by Ferdie O’Donoghue, Tom Pilkington, John Cullinan and Jimmy Kearns.

Gort

In the men’s singles competition at Gort at the weekend, the winner was Brendan Gantley with 44 points from Andrew Edler with a similar score, with Michael Grealy in third spot with 42 points. Tom Deveney won the gross with 32 points.
There will be a men’s 18-hole fourball Stableford competition this weekend.
The annual general meeting of the men’s section will take place next Monday night.   

Dromoland

The winner of the single’s Stableford competition at Dromoland at the weekend was Jason O’Leary with 38 points from Frank O’Grady on 36 points and Sean Burns on 35 points. Cormac O’Neill won the junior category with 37 points.

Shannon

Padraig Cahillane (4) won the open singles at Shannon last Wednesday with 43 points from Hugh Heaney (14) with 42 points and Liam Alford (12) with 40 points. Eoghan O’Dea (5) won the gross with 30 points.
In the ladies’ competition, Jean Murphy-Wright (9) was the winner with 30 points from Mairéad Mannix (20) also with 30 points with Christina Halpin (24) in third spot with 28 points.

Portumna

In the open three-ball waltz competition at Portumna, the winners were Ger Flannery, Brendan Regan and Pat McNamara (Moate Golf Club) with 91 points from Ollie Flanagan, Gerry Cavanagh and John Page with 85 points. In third spot were PJ Starr, TJ O Callaghan and Pat Flanagan with 82 points.
Albert Kelly beat Dermot Hayes in the final of the Murphy matchplay final by 2/1.
The matchplay foursomes were won on the 19th hole by Leslie O’Meara and Brian Grogan, who defeated Tom Mulvihill and Dermot Donovan. 
The ladies’ AGM will be held on Sunday, November 13 in the clubhouse at 4pm. The incoming captain for 2012 is Ena Moran and her vice-captain is Pauline McEvoy.
The men’s club AGM will be held on Tuesday, November 8 at 8pm in the clubhouse.
The incoming captain for 2012 is Frank Ryan and the incoming president is Michael Carty.
Ronan Mitchell and Colin Harney have been selected for the boys’ U-12 provincial coaching development panel for the 2011/2012 Programme.

Spanish Point

Despite the uncertain weather over the Bank Holiday Weekend, a good number played golf, especially on Monday last, and the members’ competitions were well supported. The turkey competition was played as a team of three or four in modified rumble format with one score on par 4s, two scores on par 3s and three scores on par 5s to count. The winners with a score of 77 points were Tom Mernagh (6), Brian O’Loughlin (10), Joe O’Rourke (16) and Michael Hillery (15).
The seniors open continues each Tuesday and the competition on Tuesday last was won by John O’Brien (14) with 37 points from David Fitzgerald (16) with 35 points. The turkey competition for next weekend will be a fourball betterball. The seniors’ open day continues on Tuesdays and for the winter period there will be an open competition each Friday with the winter classic continuing. Timesheets are in the clubhouse (065 7084198). This Friday, the annual general meeting of the men’s club will be held and all members are invited to attend.

Woodstock

The Sheelagh Garvey matchplay final was played during the week. Kathleen McEnery was the winner, beating Fran Feighery in the final. The beaten semi-finalists were Áine Burke and Clare Hall. The November competition is nine-hole S/F, Monday to Saturday, 14-hole turkey competition S/F on Sundays. Draw on Sundays at 11.50 sharp.
In the seniors’ weekly competition, Bobby Burke was the winner with 30 points. 

East Clare

In the men’s singles at East Clare at the weekend the winner was Francis Maloney (11) with 44 points from Ger Slater (18) with a similar score.
In an open team-of-four competition, the winners of the men’s section were Jim Dunne (9), Teddy O’Hanlon (14), Enda Donnellan (15) and Mike Stritch (17) with 97 points while the winners in the ladies’ section with 91 points were Brid Hayes (15), Margaret MacNamara (20), Heather Cullen (16) and Terry Mulvihill (25). The winners in the mixed section were Ger Hogan (12), Liam Nolan (16), Siobhán Shanahan (16) and Catherine Minogue (23) with  92 points.
Teddy O’Hanlon and Catherine will play Maurice Costelloe and Mary Mannion in the final of the club mixed matchplay.
In the men’s seniors’ section, the winners last week were John Stack, Martin Mason and Oliver Quigney from Charles Stuart, Finbarr Ryan and Nick Ryan with third spot filled by Flan Mullane, Jackie McHugh and Jack Manly. The singles winner was Chris Davis.
In the ladies’ seniors section the winners were Sue Casey, Marie A Kelly and Georgina Wright from Margaret O’Grady, Ina Reddan and Catherine Murphy.
The captain’s (William O’Brien and Siobhán Shanahan) dinner takes place in the clubhouse this Saturday night and tickets available at the office (061 921322).

Kelly wins at Clare Road

Tommy Kelly was the winner of the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club’s scratch cup on Sunday. Gareth Kerin was the runner-up and Marty Fawl won the gross.
The Helen Cuddihy Memorial trophy will be played for this Sunday at 10am.
