Golden haul for five Clare athletes

The North Munster Schools Cross Country Championships were held in very cold and damp weather conditions at the Salesian Secondary College, Pallaskenry, Limerick. Clare athletes dominated all eight races, delivering outstanding individual performances, with five winning gold.

Caoimhe Harvey (Kilkee Community College) won the junior girls’ 2,000m and Aishling Kelly (St Joseph’s, Spanish Point) won the bronze medal. Laura Power (Coláiste Muire, Ennis) won the intermediate girls’ 2,500m.

In the minor boys, Sean Cahill (St Joseph’s, Tulla) who finished 10th in the Clare schools finals, captured the gold medal over 2,000m, with Paul Martin (Rice College) taking the silver medal.

Jamie Roche (St Flannan’s) won the junior boys’ 3,000m, with Eoin Looney (St Joseph’s, Spanish Point) finishing fourth.

Kevin Mulcaire (St Flannan’s), the first Irish athlete home in the McCain’s international Cross Country in Wales, captured the North Munster intermediate cross-country with Sean Collins (St Flannan’s) finishing in fifth place.
In the senior boys’ 5,000m, Stephen Rooney (Gaelcoláiste an Chláir), was very strong in testing conditions on his way to winning the silver medal ahead of Karl Fitzmaurice (St Pat’s, Shannon).

In the minor girls’ 1,500m Caoimhie Carmody (St Flannan’s) came home in fourth spot with Katie Power (Coláiste Muire, Ennis), fifth. In the senior ladies’ 2,500m, Róisín Considine (Ennistymon Vocational School) came away with the silver medal with Siobhán Nestor (fifth), Caolann McCormack (sixth) and Emer Hillery (seventh), all Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon, winning the team title.

In the inter-club awards Coláiste Muire, Ennis won the minor girls’ with St Joseph’s, Tulla taking the bronze medals. In the minor boys, there was a big win for St Joseph’s, Tulla, with St Flannan’s taking the bronze medals.

In the junior girls, gold went to Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon on 41 points just one point ahead of St Michael’s Kilmihil on 42 points. In the junior boys, St Flannan’s won on 53 points, with the bronze medals going to Kilkee on 134.

In the intermediate girls’ team section, Coláiste Muire, Ennis won the silver medals while, in the intermediate men’s, there was another great victory for St Flannan’s on 53 points, with Ennistymon Vocational School taking the silver medals on 69 points. St Michael’s Kilmihil were fourth on 117 points.

Two North Clare Schools dominated the senior awards, with Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon winning the senior girls’ team title on 21 points and Ennistymon CBS taking the boys’ team gold on 89 points. Ennistymon Vocational School won the bronze medals on 101points.
