Glór Irish Music Centre in Ennis has been named Munster’s Live Music Venue of the Year 2012.
This is the first time the Clare theatre has been a recipient of the award, despite having been nominated in the category for the last five years.
The venue was announced as the Munster winner at a ceremony held at IMRO headquarters in Dublin on Tuesday night.
Glór beat off competition from Crane Lane Theatre, Cork; Cork Opera House, Cork; DeBarras, Clonakilty, County Cork and University Concert Hall, Limerick.
Speaking about the announcement, Gemma Carcaterra, director of Glór, said she is delighted the people of Clare and Glór performers supported them in securing the Munster Live Music Venue of the Year title.
“We have been nominated for the last five years and this is first time we’ve won. Glór is a local venue that offers a national and international programme.
“It is a venue that hosts up-and-coming artists as well as established artists and everyone who comes here wants to come back,” she said.
She explained that the award signified that Glór is a favoured venue not only by its audiences but also by artists and performers, who were also eligible to vote in the competition.
“Hopefully, we will be nominated again and we could go for the national venue award but we would be up against some really big venues.
“The fact that we got this award is exceptional and shows that we are doing something very right and we’ll keep aiming high into the future,” Ms Carcaterra said.
The IMRO Live Music Venue of the Year Awards celebrates the dedication and passion of those who work in Ireland’s live music venues, providing the public with an exceptional live music experience, week in, week out.
Venues were judged on their commitment to providing the core elements that make for a great live music venue – atmosphere, sound and lighting, staging, diversity of programming and, most importantly, the staff and management of each venue.
