Thomas Nowakowski, a 38-year-old father of one, passed away in the Toberteascain area of the town last week.Gardaí are treating the incident as a hit and run.
Arrangements by Mr Nowakowski’s family were made for a cremation service to be held in Cork this week, with a memorial service in Ennis expected to take place in the coming days.
Mr Nowakowski, who is understood to have been on holidays from his job at Hillbilly Chicken in Ennis, was just yards away from his home in Tober Beg when he was struck by a car. Gardaí and ambulance services were called to the scene at around 10pm on Wednesday of last week after a report was received of a person lying on the ground. The deceased’s wife and young child were on holidays in Poland at the time and efforts were made to contact them.
Gardaí in Ennis launched an investigation and an appeal for public information was issued. A woman in her 30s presented herself at Ennis Garda Station and was detained and questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. The woman was released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
According to a member of the local Polish community and a friend of the deceased, “We are all absolutely shocked at what has happened. He was a good man and they were [sic] a good family.”
