Gaels record comfortable victory

WEST Clare Gaels were comprehensive winners of their senior championship tie played on Sunday in Quilty. They had it much their own way in the first half, leading 2-8 to 0-2 at the interval.

Liscannor had opened the scoring in the second minute with a point from Fiona Considine. Soon after, Majella Griffin put two points from frees on the board for the Gaels. Rita Boland intercepted a Liscannor pass and found Katie Geoghegan, who put another point on the board. Liscannor got their only other score of the half when Áine Burke scored a free for her side.
The Gaels dominated scoring for the remainder of the half with a well-taken penalty by Katie Geoghegan, after Niamh Lardner was fouled in the square. Majella Griffin scored a goal and a point from play and a pointed free, while points from midfielder Maria Kelly and corner-forwards Niamh Lardner and Bríd Troy finished the first-half scoring.
The Gaels started the second half as they finished the first with scores via a pointed free from Majella Griffin and a point from play each from Katie Geoghegan and Bríd Troy. Olivia Lucas got a better half off to a start for Liscannor with a point, only to be answered with another Majella Griffin point. Aisling Torpey gave a well-needed boost to her team with a well-placed goal for Liscannor.
Three points from play for the Gaels from Katie Geoghegan, Maria Kelly and Bríd Troy finished their scoring. Liscannor finished by adding points from Olivia Lucas and Marie Considine (2).
Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to overtake the focused and tenacious effort from the Gaels. An all-round team effort saw great displays for the West Clare side, especially from their younger team members, Marie Foran, Gráinne Harvey, Ailish Brew and Shauna Melican.
