Gaels-Kilmihil extend their winning run

Shannon Gaels/Kilmihil 2-11
Éire Óg 2-6

Shannon Gaels/Kilmihil recorded their third victory in the U-16 Division 2 Football Championship against Éire Óg at St Flannan’s grounds last Saturday.

The Gaels/Kilmihil combination, playing against a slight wind in the first half, got off to a better start, with points from Darragh Bohannon either side of a goal from Shane O’Connor.
Barry Cotter quickly got a goal back for Éire Óg to keep them in touch but Gaels/Kilmihil had further points from David Kileen, Shane O’Connor (2), Darragh Bohannon and Ronan Callinan to close the half at 1-7 to Éire Óg’s 1-2, following points from Conor O’Halloran and David McNamara.

Éire Óg started the second half well, with Conor O’Halloran scoring an early point and a goal from a penalty followed by a point each from David McNamara and Jake Spelman.
David Lernihan for Shannon Gaels/ Kilmihil and Cathal Lynch for Éire Óg exchanged points before Gaels/Kilmihil took control again with a goal and a point from Shane O’Connor, followed by points from Darragh Bohannon and David Lernihan to leave the final score 2-11 to 2-6.

In an entertaining game, Éire Óg found it difficult to penetrate the solid defence of Shannon Gaels/Kilmihil, with Mikey Keating and Cian Moloney particularly dominant. Darragh Bohannon put in a great hour at midfield while Shane O’Connor and Chris O’Connor, especially when he moved to midfield, caused all sorts of problems. Brian Flynn, Conor O’Halloran, Ryan Shannon and David McNamara stood out for Éire Óg.

Doonbeg/Kilkee 1-5
Kilrush 1-4

Kilrush met the Doonbeg/Kilkee combination last Saturday morning in Kilkee. Underfoot conditions and a swirling breeze made conditions difficult for both teams.
Kilrush, after a facile win the previous week over The Banner, were confident of continuing their good form. However Doonbeg/Kilkee were up for this game and made things very difficult for Kilrush, who opened the scoring with a superb sideline kick from Colm Pyne after 12 minutes. Doonbeg/Kilkee equalised three minutes later with a free from Kevin O’Brien. Kilrush got their second point from Davy Foran in the 23rd minute and just before half-time, a great move involving the same player resulted in a goal scored by Ryan Ellis. The Shamrocks led at half-time 1-2 to 0-1.

The second half started with both sides exchanging points from Darragh Kelly and Eoin Tubridy. Doonbeg/Kilkee pressed the Kilrush backs into mistakes and two more points from Tubridy and Kevin O’Brien left two points between the teams with only 10 minutes to go.

A Niall Ellis pointed free extended the lead to three before Doonbeg/Kilkee’s James Greene equalised with a great goal.
Eoin Tubridy scored the winning point from 20m for the combination outfit.   Ryan and Niall Ellis and Colm Pyne performed well for Kilrush, while Eoin Tubridy, Kevin O’Brien and Patrick Lucey played well for Doonbeg/Kilkee.

Coolmeen/Kildysart 2-12
Kilmurry-Ibrickane 1-4

Coolmeen-Kildysart accounted for Kilmurry-Ibrickane at the weekend. The winners opened with a point by Alan Normoyle and this early score set the tone. Further points by Ben Cleary, Normoyle, Barry Crehan, Cian Murphy and Stephen Sheehan extended the lead. The highlight of the half was a brilliant goal from Stephen Sheehan to leave the winners 1-11 to 0-2 in front at the break.

The winners controlled the second half with an open attacking style of play. Further goals from David Clancy and Ben Cleary confirmed the victory. Eric Scanlon, Brian Meaney, Jack Sheehan and David Cusack impressed when introduced as substitutes in the second half.
Coolmeen-Kildysart: Adam Carrigg; Kevin McMahon, Rory McMahon, Conor Donellan; Mark Meaney, Darragh Cleary, Kieran O’Brien; Cian Murphy, Ben Cleary; David Clancy, Alan Normoyle, Barry Crehan; Ryan Casey, Stephen Sheehan, Aaron Slobody.
Subs used: Eric Scanlan, Brian Meaney, Jack Sheehan, David Cusack.

Cooraclare 1-10
Clondegad 1-4

A highly entertaining game last Saturday morning went Cooraclare’s way but the outcome was not decided until the final quarter.
Clondagad opened with a point from a free. It was nip and tuck for half an hour but Cooraclare went to the break with a slight advantage, 0-6 to 0-4, with the breeze in their favour for the next half.
Clondegad weren’t going to concede easily and found the Cooraclare net, 10 minutes into the second half. Unfortunately for the visitors, they missed some crucial scoring chances from play and dead balls. Cooraclare finished out the game with points from Ciarán O’Donoghue (2), Jack Morrissey (2), and a well-taken goal by Rory McCloon. Credit must be given to both defences as scores were often hard earned, with Cooraclare topping that battle, only conceding five scores in an hour.
Cooraclare: Killian Roche; Donal O’Grady, Killian Burke, Niall Kelly; Sean O’Neill, Pearce Lillis, Seanie McNamara; Shane O’Donoghue, Keith Marninan; Jack Morrissey, Ciaran O’Donoghue, Davy Martin; Patrick Meaney, Rory McCloon, Fergal Donnenlan.
Subs used: Shane McNamara, Colin McNamara, Mark Cunningham, Barry O’Gorman.
