Funeral takes place of crash victim

The funeral took place this week of 25-year-old Robert (Robbie) Cahill who died tragically in a road accident in Tipperary last week.

Mr Cahill was the youngest of eight and his family are a very well-known and respected family from Mountshannon. His father Padraig, who was originally from a well-known Gort family, died last December. He is survived by his mother Marcella (nee Kerin and originally from Bellharbour); siblings David, Fiona, Fergal, Fintan, Aisling, Majella and Raymond and extended family.
Mr Cahill was a carpenter and a keen sportsman, both as a player and a follower.  He was a member of Mountshannon Celtic Soccer Club and Whitegate Hurling Club and supported Liverpool FC.
The 25-year-old died following a single car collision shortly after 4pm, when the van in which he and his brother Fintan were travelling in collided with a ditch at Traverston, Dolla, County Tipperary. The two carpenters were returning home after working in Thurles that day.
His brother Fintan was seriously injured in the crash but attended his brother’s funeral on Monday which took place in Mountshannon Church at 11.30am with burial afterwards at the new cemetery in Moynoe, Scariff.
Councillor Pat Burke said the community were taken aback to learn of his death.
“We were all so shocked when the news started to filter through and when we heard who it was it was so tragic. Robbie was such a popular young fella in the community. He was comfortable watching a soccer match with people twice his age in the local pub as he was to be out with his own age group. He was so well loved by everybody in the community and is from such a well-respected family in the community. It was such an awful shock, especially so soon after the death of Padraig.”
