Full range of medals for Clare athletes

The Munster Senior, Junior, Masters and U-23 Men’s and Ladies’ Indoor Championships were held recently at the Nenagh Indoor Arena. Clare athletes gave outstanding performances when taking home 26 gold, 14 silver and five bronze medals while Ennis Track won silver medals in the masters’ ladies and masters men’s 4 x 200m relays.

In the junior ladies’ 3,000m walk, Claudia Loughnane (Marian) was the first Clare athlete of 2013 to take a gold medal, as she led from start to finish.

In the 800m, Siobhán Nestor (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) went out hard from the start and maintained it for four laps to take a silver medal with Muireann O’Shea (Marian) a very good third.

Rachel Clancy (St John’s) stepped up to the junior ladies’ high jump and came away with a bronze medal with a leap of 1.45m and she finished fourth in the shot putt with a throw of 7.75m.

In the senior ladies, four Clare athletes were in action in the 3,000m, Cushla Bríd Hehir, Becky Coughlan (both Ennis Track), Noreen Mackey and Dympna O’Dwyer (both Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) with Cushla Bríd Hehir finishing the best of the four in fourth place. In the 800m, Zelma Power (Ennis Track) won the gold medal in 2.49.29.

Two Leevale athletes controlled the race from the start, with Jason Fahy covering their every move and with two of the 15 laps remaining, the Sixmilebridge man made a very decisive break to take the gold medal in 8.34.42.

In the 400m, Adam Bluett (Marian) won the title in 64.68. In the U-23 1,500m Darragh Lynch (Ennis Track) had to work hard and went into the lead at the bell but going down the back straight was overtaken. Rounding the home straight with 30m to go, Lynch once again made one last big effort, which saw him take the title on the line with a time of 4.05.75.

The Clare masters swept the boards with Michelle Timmoney Reeves (Ennis Track) taking gold in the 200m and 3,000m and a silver medal in the 1,500m.
