Four Clare hurlers remain in the hunt for glory

The way is clear for the semi-finals of the Fitzgibbon cup, the inter-varsity hurling championship, in Galway next Friday. hosted by GMIT, the final will be on Saturday.

Four Clare players remain in contention and some exciting fare is expected when the competition concludes.
Mary Immaculate College from Limerick, coached by Eamonn Cregan and with Clonlara’s John Conlon, Colm Galvin and Cillian Fennessy in their line-up, secured their place in the last four with a 1-18 to 0-15 win over Dublin IT at Parnells GAA club on Tuesday.

In the semi-final they will p lay Waterford IT, who had a 0-21 to 1-14 win over Limerick IT at Carriganore in Waterford on Wednesday.

The Davy Fitzgerald Limerick IT side included andrew Fahy (Whitegate), Sean Collins and Cathal McInerney (Cratloe), Jamie Fitzgibbon (Crusheen), Gary Guilfoyle and Colin Nelson (Feakle) while Niall O’Connor from Newmarket was introduced during the second half.

Defending champions UCC, with Ruan’s Killian Ryan in their team, came from behind to overcome neighbours Cork IT who included Patrick O’Connor and Stephen O’Halloran at the Mardyke on Tuesday. They will now play UCD in the semi-final after the Dublin college scored a 1-16 to 0-17 win over University of Limerick on Wednesday afternoon.

Clare players in the Limerick team were Conor Ryan (Cratloe) at centre-back, Shane Golden (Sixmilebridge) at midfield and Darach Honan (Clonlara) in attack. It was Honan’s first competitive game for some time due to injury and he caused huge problems for the winners before being replaced in the third quarter.
