COUNCILLOR Michael Fleming has requested that a set-down area be put at the front of SkyCourt Shopping Centre facing Rossbracken.
In his motion to this month’s town council meeting, he stated it is “unfair that people using the ATM and video shop for five minutes are being ticketed”.
In response, engineer Eugene O’Shea stated, “The provision of a set-down area in front of the SkyCourt Shopping Centre is a matter for the SkyCourt management company and not Clare County Council at this location, given that the footpath is not in the ownership of the council. A proposed layout was drafted for a set-down area some time ago by the SkyCourt management company, however, this was not progressed.”
Councillor Fleming said that while the council are saying responsibility lies with SkyCourt, SkyCourt in turn are putting it on the council. He said there is a video shop and two ATMs at the area in question and people park right outside it, rather than going into the car park.
Councillor Greg Duff said the parking was also causing difficulties for drivers coming up to the road from the library, as they are not able to see traffic clearly.
Councillor Tony McMahon said ultimately the problem has arisen due to bad planning and there are vacant units where the ATMs could be moved to.
