Flannan’s win Munster junior camogie title

St Flannan’s, Ennis 3-7   St Mary’s, Nenagh 2-2

ST Flannan’s captured the Munster Colleges Junior A Camogie title last week when they proved too strong for St Mary’s, Nenagh.

The winners got off to a good start in the opening half with a point by full-forward Aoife Keane after a well-worked move by the Flannan’s forwards. This was followed by a goal from centre-forward Louise Browne when a high ball found its way into the net. Aoife Keane added another point before Lauren Tuohy pointed two well-taken frees to leave Flannan’s in front by 1-4 to 0-0. Another goal followed from Louise Browne to stretch the Ennis school’s lead.

However, with 10 minutes to go in first half, Nenagh got on top, put 1-1 on the scoreboard and were a little unlucky not to score more. Both teams displayed excellent skill, particularly on a wet muddy field and the game was notable for some brilliant fielding in particular. Flannan’s held off Nenagh to go in at half-time with a healthy lead, 2-4 to 1-1.

Nenagh started the second half as they had finished the first, scoring a goal in the first minute and reducing the gap to four points. However, Flannan’s kept their heads and regained their dominance, with two more points from Aoife Keane and a goal by Laoise Ryan. Nenagh pointed again but Lauren Tuohy sealed the victory for Flannan’s with a great point from play.

Flannan’s defence and midfield worked tirelessly and some huge runs out of defence by full-back Teresa O’Keeffe were inspirational.
