First-half goals give Clonlara the edge

Clonlara 3-11   Sixmilebridge 0-11

 

Two goals in as many minutes, midway through the opening half, set Clonlara on their way to victory over Sixmilebridge on Saturday. Sixmilebridge lined out without their U-21 players due to their championship semi-final in this grade on Sunday.
At the end of the first quarter, the ’Bridge led by three points to two but this changed soon after as John Conlon and Cormac O’Donovan struck for goals for the visitors, who led 2-3 to 0-6 when the half-time whistle sounded. Just before the break, Ger O’Connell in the Clonlara goal made a good stop from Brian Culbert.
Cathal O’Connell and Caimin Morey traded scores from placed balls at the start of the second period before the latter had an effort from play to reduce the lead to two.
The winner’s lead was four points entering the final quarter, with Tomas O’Donovan, Nicky and Cathal O’Connell and Cormac O’Donovan scoring for the winners while Niall Gilligan and Ronan Mullane replied for the home side.
Despite the best efforts of Aidan Quilligan, Clonlara got through for another goal, with John Conlon finding the target. The home side played the last 10 minutes with 14 men after Rory Shanahan picked up a second yellow card.

Cratloe 2-15   Clooney-Quin 1-13

Cratloe collected their first points of this season’s campaign when they accounted for Clooney-Quin on Saturday.
Two first-half goals from Conor McGrath sent them on the way to this win and they led at the break by two points, 2-5 to 1-6, with the Clooney-Quin goal coming from a Derek Ryan penalty.
In the third quarter the sides traded points on a number of occasions and with 10 minutes to go a goal separated the sides, with the score at 2-11 to 1-11.
Clooney-Quin, who were without their U-21s due to this week’s championship final, battled to the end but it was Cratloe’s day.

Clarecastle 0-18   Whitegate 0-11

A lively start, which saw them 0-8 to 0-1 ahead, helped Clarecastle to their second win of the Clare Champion Cup campaign.
The Magpies went on to lead 0-12 to 0-4 at the break and while Whitegate fought back to within five points(0-13 to 0-8), Clarecastle emerged as deserving winners.
That said, Whitegate will be concerned at the number of wides they had in the tie, 17 in all, which was 10 more that their opponents.
Derek Quinn was Clarecastle’s top scorer with 0-8 on the day while Eoin Quirke top scored for the home side.

Crusheen 0-19   Inagh-Kilnamona 2-8

Crusheen ran up an impressive tally as they recorded their second successive victory when beating Inagh-Kilnanona at Kilnamona. The winners were in control throughout and were nine points clear midway through the second half.
Two late goals from Niall Arthur and an og closed the gap on a day when Crusheen were much the better side. Cian, Cronan and Cathal Dillon dominated in defence though and limited the home side to just a few scoring opportunities.
Fergus Kennedy (four) Ciaran O’Doherty, Jamie Fitzgibbon (three each), Cian and Shaun Dillon (two each) were the main scorers for the winners. Ger and Niall Arthur, Cathal and Damian Lafferty were point scorers for the losers.

Newmarket 4-19   Tulla 0-10

Clare Champion Cup titleholders Newmarket picked up their first points in this season’s title race when they proved much too strong for Tulla at Fr Murphy Park in Newmarket on Saturday. The Blues went into this tie without injured Clare players Colin Ryan and James McInerney but they still proved too strong for an experimental Tulla outfit.
The winners led 0-10 to 0-4 at the break before taking control throughout the pitch in the second half when they had goals from James Liddy (2) Eoin Hayes and Anthony Kilmartin. Their first-half point scorers were Eoin Hayes, David Barrett, Mike McInerney and Cork man Ronan Goode, who recently joined the club while Aidan Lynch and David McInerney were the Tulla scorers. No doubt Tulla will be hoping to do much better when the sides meet in the championship later in the season.
