Fiona Lafferty sparkles for Inagh-Kilnamona

Inagh-Kilnamona 5-13   Wolfe Tones 1-3

IN a one-sided contest at Clareabbey on Monday evening, Inagh-Kilnamona easily accounted for Wolfe Tones in their opening game of the senior championship.

The Wolfe Tones backs were in disarray, unable to cope with the on-fire, full-forward Fiona Lafferty, who notched up an impressive 5-7 in the opening half.

Evelyn McGirl goaled for Wolfe Tones after a well-worked move up the wing, Laura Linnane added a further three points leaving the half-time score 5-10 to 1-3 in favour on Inagh-Kilnamona.

The winners’ backs closed ranks in the second half and refused to yield to the pressure from Wolfe Tones. In spite of the score difference, Wolfe Tones kept working but were unable to get past Bríd McCarthy.

Éire Óg 7-11   Newmarket-on-Fergus 2-4

A YOUNG Newmarket-on-Fergus U-16 team put up a great fight against the force of Éire Óg on Monday but they couldn’t prevent the Townies as they ran out winners on a scoreline of 7-11 to 2-4.

Éire Óg had the perfect start with a goal in the second minute from Gráinne Nolan. This was soon followed by a point from Karen Roche and an outstanding save from the young Newmarket goalie Ciara McCarthy. Despite excellent defending from the Blues, Orla Devitt goaled again for the town side.

Éire Óg really got into the swing of things with a scoring blitz of three goals and a point in just five minutes from Devitt, Nolan and Caroline Walsh. Newmarket responded quickly thanks to Rachel Kelleher, with Ann Marie Hayes taking the score. A great passage of play from the Newmarket side followed an excellent Ciara McCarthy save. Kelleher converted a 45’ soon after, to boost the Blues spirits.

Sarah Redmond added to the Éire Óg tally in the last five minutes with a goal. Despite more excellent work from the Newmarket goalie and defenders Clodagh Costello and Amy O’Halloren, Roche and Nolan pointed to leave it 6-7 to 0-3 at the halfway mark.

The Newmarket girls came out in great force at the beginning of the second half, however, Éire Óg showed their determination with a goal from Walsh. Newmarket quickly responded showing excellent skill that earned them a free, which Rachel Kelleher netted from 35 yards out. Éire Óg’s Amy Broderick had an excellent second half, scoring three quick points from play. Rachel Kelleher pointed once more from a free, as Ann Marie Hayes hit the net for a late consolation for the Newmarket side.

Impressive on the day were Newmarket’s Ciara McCarthy, Clodagh Costello, Caoimhe Carmody, Rachel Kelleher and Ann Marie Hayes whilst Rae Wall, Orla Devitt, Caroline Walsh, Karen Roche and Gráinne Nolan stood out for Éire Óg.
