Fergus Rovers advance to Division 2 League final

Fergus Rovers Miltown 1-9   St Joseph’s 1-5

FERGUS Rovers were full value for their four-point win against Miltown in the Division 2 League semi-final at Quilty on Saturday.

The foundation for the victory was laid in the first half when they kicked six points against the breeze to trail just by one at the interval.

Early points from Ciara O’Malley and Orla Griffin got the winners off to a good start but a Michelle McCaw point and a clever goal from Laura Rynne put Miltown in front.

However, Rovers responded, with Orla Griffin adding a further three points, while Cliona Cleary pointed from a free. At half-time, Miltown were 1-4 to 0-6 ahead.

Lauren Griffin equalised early in the second half and once Clare Hester made her way from centre-back to score her side’s goal, which put them 1-7 to 1-4 ahead, they never looked back.

Laura Hanrahan and Louise Griffin played very well at midfield for Fergus Rovers, who also had solid performances from Lorraine Kelly, Róisín Killeen, Clare Hester, Cliona Cleary and the outstanding Orla Griffin, who kicked six points from play over the hour.

Fergus Rovers will play Burren Gaels in the final on Saturday evening in Quilty at 7.30pm. When the sides met earlier in the campaign, the North Clare side recorded a comprehensive victory.
