Feakle secure promotion and place in final

Feakle   4-21
Ennistymon   1-13

Feakle are back in the Clare Champion Cup competition for 2014 and will compete in Division 1B, after this comprehensive victory over Ennistymon at Feakle on Saturday evening ensured promotion from Division 2.

They are also through to the final of Division 2 where they will take on Sixmilebridge. Indeed, it was a good weekend for the East Clare club whose junior B side booked a place in the final of the Junior B League with a comfortable win over a fancied Newmarket team.

While Feakle were favourites to win Saturday’s Division 2 semi-final, few would have predicted the final margin at the halfway stage when the North Clare side held a one-point lead, 1-8 to 0-10, their goal coming from inter-county player, Cathal Malone.
The foundation for Feakle’s win was laid in the early stages of the second half when they hit 2-4 without reply in the first eight minutes. From here on they were in control, picking off some impressive scores in the process.

Stevie Moloney (2), Colin Nelson and Oisin Donnellan, who made up the full-forward line, were the winner’s goalscorers. In an effort to get back into contention, Ennistymon were forced to move Cathal Malone from attack to midfield and this weakened their threat up front.

Close contest expected in Gurteen

With promotion to Division 1B already assured, Feakle and Sixmilebridge will meet in the Division 2 Hurling League final in Gurteen on Saturday evening at 7.30pm.
It will be a big evening for Feakle as their junior side will play Broadford in the Junior B Championship at the same venue at 5pm.

The ’Bridge will also have a busy afternoon as their junior B team will be in championship action against Ballyea earlier in the afternoon at Newmarket.
Feakle had a convincing win over Ennistymon in last week’s semi-final, played in Feakle, when they dominated the second half.

The finalists met in round six of the league and on that occasion the ’Bridge, with home advantage, recorded a one-point win, 0-12 to 1-8.
Sixmilebridge will have a mix of youth and experience and will be looking to such as Christy Griffin, Darragh Fitzgerald, Michael Liddane, Stephen Fleming, David O’Connor and Cathal Walsh to give them the upperhand.
Feakle will be calling on Henry Hayes, Colm Naughton, Stevie Moloney, Eibhear Quilligan, Ger Hanrahan and Oisin Donnellan to lead the way. Another close contest is expected by the fact Feakle have had competitive action in recent weeks may prove decisive.
