Experience wins the day for Richmond

Richmond 12   Ennis 3

Ennis hosted Richmond in the annual Colm Flynn Memorial Cup last Sunday. The game, played under the new laws designed to speed up the play, certainly got the desired result. It was a lively affair but as with many pre-season games, their were plenty of turnovers.

Richmond who are current league, Challenge Cup and Transfield Cup champions, started very strong but met an equally strong and organised Ennis defence.

Having absorbed a good deal of pressure, Ennis turned over Richmond ball and broke out of defence got a foothold in the opposition 22. From this attack Richmond were penalised and full-back Conor Dolan converted the resulting penalty after 20 minutes.

Ennis, who started with a very young side, continued to take the game to Richmond with Cian Guilfoyle shining brightly at scrum half. Richmond, unable to break down Ennis out wide, had to take the direct route.

The Limerick club with a big pack, opted to kick a penalty to touch and from the line-out, they mauled the ball over the Ennis line for a try that was not converted.

The game continued with both defences very strong. In the dying minutes Richmond again showed great experience in deciding to go the direct route and got over for a try that they converted leaving the final score at 12-3.

While the whole squad showed a great attitude and huge commitment, players to stand out were Damien Forde, Joe Moloney and Kelan Flynn up front. Cian Guilfoyle, Shaun Flanagan and young Cian Nugent in the centre put in a great days work.
