Experience the key for Bodyke

Bodyke 2-6
Éire Óg 0-6

Experience stood to Bodyke when they overcame Éire Óg in round two of the junior championship on Sunday evening at Clonroadmore.

Éire Óg took the lead after five minutes with points from Shaunagh O’Brien and Aoife O’Neill, while Sinead O’Brien pulled one back for the visitors.

An Orla Devitt point along with a pointed free from Claire McMahon pushed the home side into a three-point lead. Éire Óg’s failure to capitalise on their possession along with two pointed frees from O’Brien, left the minimum between the sides at the break.

Bodyke attacked from the restart and were rewarded with 1-2 in the opening minutes of the second half.

Long stoppages for injury upset the flow of the match and while Éire Óg pulled back a point from a McMahon free, Bodyke notched up a further 1-1. As darkness fell, an Orla Devitt point was the final score of the match.

Tulla 8-7
Broadford 3-5

Tulla won this entertaining first round game on Sunday evening at Dr Daly Park, overcoming a spirited Broadford side.

The home team played with the aid of a strong wind in the first half, and opened the scoring with a lovely point from Aisling McNamara. Siobhán Torpey added another from play and in the fifth minute Sherena McGrath finished off a very good movement from the Tulla girls when she raised the first green flag of the game.

Broadford came more into the game and scored a point and a goal in the following five minutes. Tulla continued to attack and added goals from Katie McInerney and Sherena McGrath and points from Áine Dinan, who converted two 45s, and Siobhán Torpey and Rachel McNamara.

Broadford added a point from a free to leave the half-time score at 3-6 to 1-2 in favour of Tulla. The second half developed into a goal fest with Tulla hitting the net on five occasions and Broadford getting two. The scoreline doesn’t reflect the efforts by Broadford, especially in the second half, but they were thwarted on numerous occasions by some great defending by Lorna Power and Aoibhinn Byrnes in the full-back line and also by Aisling McNamara in the Tulla goal.

Tulla: Aisling McNamara, Aoibhinn Byrnes, Lorna Power, Grainne McNamara, Áine Dinan (0-2, 45’), Amy McNamara, Lisa Meehan, Sinead McNamara (1-0), Rachel McNamara (0-1), Siobhán Torpey (2-3), Aisling McNamara (1-1), Katie McInerney (3-0), Sherena McGrath (1-0).
Subs: Aisling Hunt for Lisa Meehan, Aoife McNamara for Aisling McNamara, Sinead McMahon for Grainne McNamara.

Ruan 6-9
Sixmilebridge 0-2

After both Ruan and Sixmilebridge suffered defeats in the opening round of the junior championship, a victory was needed for both teams on Sunday last.

Ruan convincingly secured a 6-9 to 0-2 win over Sixmilebridge’s second squad to keep their hopes alive. Ruan opened the scoring with a point, and quickly followed with 1-1 before Sixmilebridge’s Rachel Whelan got the side’s first and only score from play in the sixth minute.

Ruan took control after this and when the half-time whistle sounded, they were 4-5 to 0-1 ahead. It wasn’t until the seventh minute of the second half when Ruan put another goal past the Sixmilebridge’s defence.

Ruan continued to dominate the match and ended up with a convincing win.
