Events mark National Carers’ Week throughout the county

FAMILY carers in Clare are taking part in events to celebrate their role in community care and to mark National Carers’ Week from June 10 to 16. These events are taking place throughout the county within the nine carers’ groups.

Caring for Carers Clare is a voluntary organisation supporting family carers and those for whom they care by promoting recognition of their caring role through information, training, respite and advocacy.

To celebrate family carers, the organisation’s first event will be the presentation of certificates to 101 successful participants in the Caring in the Home/Patient Lifting and Handling/Therapeutic Hand Care and the KEYFORA Personal Development courses which were organised over the winter months. These certificates will be presented by Eilish Smith chairperson of Caring for Carers Ireland on Monday next at the Old Ground Hotel, Ennis.

On Wednesday, Family Carers are participating in a Walk in the Woods’at Lees Road followed by an evening of chat and cheer at the Grove Roslevan.
Throughout the week, other events are taking place locally in Shannon/Ennistymon/Kilrush/ Scarriff and Miltown Malbay and everyone is sure to have a well-deserved good time.

On Tuesday and Friday, the nurse-led Carers’ Clinic will open its doors to any family carer who would like to call and meet one of our clinic nurses to discus in confidence any aspect of their caring role. The clinic will open between 10am and 1pm and it is free of charge.

To round off the week, Caring for Carers Clare have invited Jacinta Kitt to address Family Carers on ‘all aspects of the interpersonal relationships involved in caring’ on Friday, June 14 at 7.30pm in the Old Ground Hotel.
Jacinta is a lecturer in Trinity College and Marino Institute of Education and provides guest lectures for many colleges. Light refreshments will be served. Family carers are highly recommended to attend.
According to Susan Hogan of Caring for Carers, “This will be a week for family carers to celebrate their essential caring role in community care. As we grow older, we will all either need care or become a carer for a loved one.”
