Ennis Track dominate cross country


ENNIS Track were the best overall club after day one at the Clare Athletics Association Novice, Masters Men’s and Ladies plus the Juvenile Even Ages (U-8 to U-18) Cross Country Championships, which were held on the lands of John and Bríd Collins, Kilnaboy. Underfoot conditions were heavy following last week’s heavy rain but entries were still very high.

After day one, Ennis Track had with 110 points, followed by Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare on 88, St Cronan’s on 51 and St Mary’s on 40.

Louise O’Mahoney, BMOH, daughter of well-known East Cork runner Donnacha O’Mahoney, got off to a flying start and captured the girls’ U-8 race from the fast-finishing Emer Clune, St Cronan’s, and Ellen Mannion, Ennis Track. Ennis Track took the team title on 44 points from St Mary’s on 61 and Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare on 72.

In the boys’ U-8 race there was a big win for Cian Neylon, Marian, from Jack O’Neill, St Cronan’s and Martin Frawley, Ennis Track. Ennis Track also took the team title in that category on 27, with the silver medals going to St Cronan’s on 65, followed by Fergus AC on 91.

In the girls’ U-10 1,000m, Susan Nestor, St Mary’s, got off to great start and led all the way to the finish line ahead of her clubmate, Saoirse Crowe and Ellie Pike, Ennis Track, with the team title going to Ennis Track on 26 points ahead of St Mary’s on 37 and Marian on 40.

In the boys’ U-10 1,000m, Ian McNamara, St Cronan’s, powered his way around the two-lap course to win in fine style with a battle for the minor placings. Niall Hogan, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, got up for the silver medal ahead of Mark Hanrahan, Ennis Track, with Ennis Track taking the team title on 26 points ahead of St Cronan’s on 36 and Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare on 88.

In the girls’ U-12 2,000m race, Emily Cahill, St Cronan’s, captured the gold medal from Sinéad Lillis, Kilmihil, and Keisha Attewell, St Mary’s. Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare took the team title on 33 points, just three points ahead of Ennis Track on 36 and Kilmihil on 55.

The boys’ U-12 race was a great contest over 2,000m and with James McGuire, Ennis Track, having a good lead with 800m to the finish, he just held on to take the gold medal from the fast-finishing Ben Whelehan, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, with Sabian Kulczynski, Marian, third. Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare won the team gold on 47 points ahead of Ennis Track on 48 points and St John’s came third on 55 points.

The girls’ U-14 3,000m event saw Aisling Kelly, St John’s, lead all the way from start to finish with Alex O’Neill, St Cronan’s, a very good second, followed by Caoimhie Harvey, St John’s. Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare won the team gold on 33 points from St John’s on 46 and St Mary’s on 52.

Eoin Looney, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare and Aidan McCarthy, St Cronan’s, made an early break in the boys’ U-14 race and with the race almost at the halfway point, Looney made a very decisive break to claim the gold medal with Jamie Roche, Ennis Track, coming through to take the silver medal. Caoilfhionn O’Dea, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, finished strong to take the bronze medal with Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare taking the team gold on 17 points, well ahead of Ennis Track on 39 points.

The girls’ U-16 4,000m was a great contest and the surprise winner was Shannon O’Grady, Shannon, with Shauna Melican, St John’s, taking the silver medal and Mia Hanrahan gaining many valuable places over the final 800m to take the bronze medal. Ennis Track won the team title on 24 points.

The boys’ U-16 race was a much closer affair, with three Ennis Track Club athletes making a decisive break after 1,000m. Kevin Mulcaire came home a worthy winner ahead of Sean Collins and Noel McMahon, with Ennis Track taking another team gold on 14 points ahead of Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare on 34.

The girls’ U-18 event was run in conjunction with the novice and masters ladies with Niamh Markham, Ennis Track, taking the title ahead of Laura Power, Ennis Track and Róisín Considine, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare. Ennis Track won the team title on 19 points.

In the boys’ U-18 6,000m race, Stephan Rooney, Ennis Track, had to work hard to take the gold medal ahead of Ian Slobody, Kilmihil, with Shannon’s Karol Fitzmaurice in third place.

Anna Crooks dominated the novice ladies’ 4,000m to capture the gold medal with the U-18 champion, Niamh Markham, in second place and Becky Coughlan, Ennis Track, third.

Ennis Track won the team title on 10 points from another Ennis Track team on 35 and Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare on 38.

The masters ladies O-35s title went to Marie Carey, Ennis Track, ahead of Lorraine Hayes, Ennis Track and Marie Killeen, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare with the O-40s title going to Marian Burke, St Mary’s, ahead of Hilda O’Connor, Ennis Track and Mags Malone, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare.

Michelle O’Mahoney, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, retained the title in the O-45s ahead of  Helen O’Hanlon, Ennis Track and Sue Garrahy, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare with Marian O’Loughlin, Ennis Track, capturing the O-50s title. The masters ladies team title went to Ennis Track on 17 points, followed by Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare on 25.

The novice and masters men’s and U-18s events were run over a distance of 6,000m. Ennis Track’s Stephan Rooney recorded a great win with Michael Kelly, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, a very good second and Keith Lynch, BMOH, in third spot. Ennis Track won the team gold on 65 points from Bridgemilers/Olympic Harriers on 78 and Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare on 83.

James McIntyre captured the masters O-35 ahead of Kenneth Hickey, Ennis Track and John Hannon, BMOH, with John O’Malley, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare taking the O-40s. The O-45s title went to Thomas Walsh, BMOH, ahead of Pat Hogan, Ennis Track and Jim Carrigan, Ennis Track, with the O-50s title going to Iggy Landers, St Cronan’s.

The O-55 race was dominated by Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare athletes with Tom Mackey taking the gold medal and the silver medal going to Aidan Cabey, ahead of James Sexton with the O-60s title going to Tom Madden, Marian, ahead of Sean Whelan, Ennis Track.

Overall title for Miltown schools

MILTOWN Malbay schools won the overall trophy at the 10th annual North Clare National Schools Cross Country Championships, which were held on the lands of John and Bríd Collins, Kilnaboy and attracted 600 competitors.

All 11 parishes and 27 national schools were represented. The overall trophy went to the 2007 champions, Miltown Malbay/Moy/Rineen/Rockmount with a total of 67 points from the title holders for the past three years, Ennistymon/Steiner/Lahinch/Clouna/Furglan on 60 with third spot going to Kilmaley/Connolly/Inch on 59, followed by Ruan/Toonagh on 55.

Miltown/Moy/Rineen/Rockmount recorded outstanding victories when taking team gold in the girls’ and boys’ O-10 and U-10 girls and a double team silver in the girls’ and boys’ U-8.
