IN the JB Carr Seniors’ competition, Ennis qualified for the Munster final when they defeated Limerick at Limerick on Friday.
Ennis came through in a very tight contest on a 3-2 scoreline. They will now play Kenmare in the final, which will take place on a home-and-away basis with the combined scores deciding the winners.
Tony Coote and Paul Higgins were first into action for Ennis and they lost a very tight game on the 18th. The teams were level when the second Ennis pairing of Pat Murphy and Matt Flynn recorded a comfortable win in their game. Next up for Ennis were Noel Pyne and Johnnie Cullinan, who won their match on the 18th to give their side the lead. Luke Coote and Sean O’Gorman were pipped on the 19th leaving the outcome of the game dependent on the result of the final match. Eamonn Corry and Eamonn Kelly won a tremendous tussle on the 18th to seal victory for the side managed by Jimmy McNamara, with Sean Fitzpatrick and Pádraig Ryan as his assistants.
In the Eileen Murphy foursomes at Ennis, the winners were Eileen Corry and Mary Leahy with 37 points from Kitty Morris and Claire Carmody with 36.
Mary McMahon won the Friday open singles with 37 points from Margaret Lacheiner on 34 points.
In the Duggan Cup on Sunday, John Lillis was the winner with five-up from Leo Herbert on three-up, Mattie Molyneaux on two-up and James Clune on two-up. Liam Pyne won the gross with five-down.
John McCarthy won the Friday open singles with 40 points from Rona Nalty on a similar score. Frank Landy was third with Gerard O’Halloran in fourth spot and they also scored 40 points. Conor Brennan won the gross with 33 points.
The winner of the July medal was Martin Daly with 64 nett.
Ennis Seniors held the second leg of the PV McInerney Trophy last week when they came out on top against Ballinasloe.
First with 48 points were Conor Murphy and Frank Coffey and they were followed by Luke Coote and Tim McAllister on 46, Kevin Ryan and John Keane on 45, Gerry Gilligan and Michael Torpey on 45.
The annual open week at Ennis gets underway this Thursday with a boys’ and girls’ 18-hole singles competition. There will be ladies’ and men’s singles on Friday, a fourball for ladies and men on Saturday, a team-of-four competition on Sunday, a three-ball scramble on Monday, a singles on Tuesday, a team of three on Wednesday, a team of four modified scramble on Thursday, a singles on Friday and a scotch mixed foursomes on Saturday, August 4.
Timesheets will operate for all competitions.
East Clare
IN the men’s 18-hole stroke competition at East Clare, Tony Stuart (16) was the winner with 68 nett from Pádraig Hession (2) with 70 nett and Mike Reddan (3) with 72 nett.
The winner of the men’s 18-hole Stableford competition was Finbarr Ryan (14) with 42 points from John Farrell (19) with 41 points.
In the men’s seniors outing the winners were Teddy Murphy, Jack Hogan and Steve Symes from Jim Greene, JJ Barton and Willie Roche with third spot filled by Kevin Mannion, Tom Larkin and PJ Higgins.
In the ladies’ 18-hole Stableford competition, the winner was Mairéad Twomey with 40 points from Fiona Kinsella and Mary Collins.
In the senior ladies’ outing, Brigid Minogue won from Trish Kerr and Noreen Ryan.
In the Friday scramble, the winners were Phil Burke, Catherine Minogue and Val Donnellan from Ann Harte, Denis Collins and John Fahy with third spot filled by Tony McNulty, Nancy Starr and Tim McGrath.
There will be an 18-hole stroke competition for ladies and men this weekend.
Woodstock
TOM Dormer (14) won the July medal at Woodstock with a score of 69. He had one shot to spare over Gerry Kelly (9) with William Thompson (16) in third spot, also with 70. Kieran Cunnane (scratch) won the gross with 76.
In the Wednesday open singles, the winner was Gary Flynn (20) with 39 points from James Carmody (8) with a similar score.
The weekly seniors’ competition was a three-ball rumble over 16 holes and the winners were Cyril O’Dowd, Richard Pyne and Jim McMahon with 68 points.
The winner of the ladies’ monthly medal at Woodstock was Kathleen McEnery with 76 nett. She won from Joan Barrett with 80 nett
In the mixed scramble on Thursday, the winners were Jim Carmody, Patsy Nugent and John O’Dwyer from Michael O’Brien, Ramona Gleeson and Cathy Hanrahan.
The captain’s fourball to the ladies will be the competition on this Sunday from 12 noon, while the captain’s prize to the ladies will be played for on Sunday week, August 5 with the draw taking place on Thursday, August 2.
Gort
LAST Monday’s open singles at Gort was won by Kevin Moran (8) with 38 points from Tom Finneran (12) with 37 points and Part Cradock (18) with 35 points. Enda Cradock (scratch) won the gross with 35 points.
The winner of the weekend singles was Brian Grealy (21) with 44 points from David Hennessy (20) with 43 points, Michael Kelly (17) with 41 points and Ger Hoban (15) with 41 points. Tony Finnegan (5) won the gross with 37 points. Val Hoarty recorded a hole-in-one at the fifth hole.
This Saturday, Frank Higgins’ captain’s prize final will take place, while there will be a mens singles’ competition over the weekend.
The winners of last week’s ladies’ fourball competition were Maura Hanrahan and Carmel Murphy with 38 points from Regina Malone and Ann Jordan with 37 points. There will be a singles stroke competition this week.
Dromoland
JASON Ryan was the winner of the men’s singles Stableford competition at Dromoland last week with 45 points. He won by six from Con Ryan with third spot filled by Paul McDaid on 39 followed by Tony Cleary with 38 points. Cormac O’Neill won the junior section with 33 points.
In the intermediate scratch cup competition on Sunday, Dermot Walsh from Tralee was the winner with 82 gross. In the nett category, Jackie Mulvihill from Listowel won with 71 from Noel O’Connor from the host club with 72 and Sean Donnellan from Dromoland with 73.
Maureen McKeogh’s (lady captain) prize will be played for this Saturday with the tee available from 12 noon to 2.30pm. The lady captain’s prize to the men will be at 6pm on Saturday evening.
In the ladies’ medal competition, the winner was Maureen McKeogh with 70 nett from Mairéad Bergin on 71 nett and Suzanne McConway with 73.

Lahinch
THE ladies’ outing to Killarney last week was won by Elayne Hickey, Jacinta O’Síocháin, Niamh Whelan and Jenny Cagney with 88 points from Mary O’Meara, Frances Wood, Mary Mannion, and Geri Baggott with 84 points. In third spot with 82 points were Anna Glynn, Jean Molony, Vera Madden and Pat Ramsey.
In the men’s open singles last Wednesday, Jack Hennessy (14) was the winner with 37 points. The ladies’ open singles Stableford competition on the same day on the Castle Course was won by Kate Fleming (34) with 31 points.
Thursday’s men’s open singles competition was won by Gavin Whitaker (12), Milltown with 39 points from Joe McAleese (11) from the host club with 38 points. Robert Browne (5), Castle, was third with 38 points, while Eoin Glynn won the gross with 29 points.
In the ladies’ open singles on Thursday, Liz O’Driscoll (21) from Castletroy was the winner with 31 points.
In a scotch foursomes Stableford on Friday, Matt (9) and Mary Murray (36) were the winners with 40 points from Ger (5) and Rachel Maher (19) with 41 points (they weren’t eligible for the winner’s prize). In third spot were Jerry Foley (7) and Lynn Slattery (20) with 40 points followed by Jim Bowe (15), Enniscrone and Catherine McKenna (18) with 39 points.
Eamonn Foley (20) and Catherine McKenna (18) won the first nine with 30 points, while Brian (20) and Aedin McCarthy Junior (12) won the second nine with 23 points.
In Saturday’s men’s singles Stableford competition on the Castle Course, John Morris (9) was the winner with 43 points from Patrick Burke Junior (9) with 41 points and Pat Vaughan (14) with 41 points. Eoin Doohan (1) won the gross with 39 points.
The lady president’s (Dairin Coen) prize was played for on the championship course on Saturday when the winner was Gráinne Dalton (6) with 38 points from Mary O’Meara (12) with a similar score.
Linda Doyle (15) was third with 38 points followed by Jo Heffernan (19) with 37 points, Rose Doyle (15) with 37 points, Jean O’Callaghan (18) with 36 points, Emer Digan (9) with 36 points and Georgina Condon (17) with 36 points. Chloe Ryan won the gross with 35 points.
The nines were won by Evelyn Lyons and Emily Chambers, both with 21 points. Felicity Ryan (36) won the handicap 30 to 36 section with 29 points.
In the sliver section, Niamh Whelan (11) was the winner with 36 points from Orla Barry (6) with a similar score. Kyra Donworth (10) was next with 35 points followed by Rachel Maher (19) with 35 points and Jacinta O’Síocháin (9) with 35 points.
In the bronze section, Hazel Caird (24) won with 34 points from Pat Ramsey (22) with 33 points, Mary Lucas (34) with 32 points, Ruth O’Gorman (21) with 32 points and Antoinette McMahon (21) with 32 points.
In the nearest-the-pin competition, Georgina Condon won on the championship course, while Ger Rush won on the Castle Course.
The winner of the 18-hole competition on the Castle Course was Kay McDermott (29) with 28 points, while Mary O’Halloran (29) won the nine-hole competition with 14 points.
Sunday’s men’s fourball Stableford competition was won by Robert Browne (4) and Barry Dunworth (18) with 40 points from Declan McInerney (scratch) and Pat Burke (8) with 40 points. In third place were Ray Hennessy (32) and Jarlath O’Halloran (5) with 39 points.
Shannon
THE winners of the team-of-four competition at Shannon last week were Colm Egan (13), Eamonn Kirwin (14), John Doyle (18) and Joe Cosgrove (15) with 97 points.
In second place with 95 points were Michael Kilmartin (12), Pat Griffin (16), Denis Bartley (18) and John Monahan (22) and they were followed by Brian (15) and Christy Sherlock (15), Gerry O’Malley (19) and Michael Williams (21) with 95 points.
In a singles competition last Thursday, Thomas O’Dea (12) was the winner with 41 points from Jason O’Donnell (2) with 40 points, Nicholas Hawes (17) with 39 points, Derek Sweeney (6) with 39 points, James Fitzgerald (10) with 39 points and Jeremiah Walsh (20) with 38 points.
In the mixed scotch foursomes on Friday, the winners were Maurice Hartery and Orla Walsh with 45 points from Aidan Mannix and Lynn Kelly with 44 points. They were followed by Michael Jones and Patricia Walsh 44 points, Ben and Deirdre Coady with 43 points, Ger and Liz O’Shea with 43 points and John and Kerrie Mansell with 42 points.
The gross was won by Eamon Fanneran and Máire McMahon with 28 points.
In the three-person scramble on Saturday, the winners were Colm O’Flynn, Colm Reidy and Denis Quinlivan from Jason and Gavin O’Donnell and Daniel Brennan. In third spot were Seamus Doyle, Eamon Fanneran and Niall McMahon followed by Dermot and Colm Egan and Eamon Kirwin with fifth spot filled by Ed Hickey, Tony Keane and Jim O’Grady.
Sunday’s singles competition was won by Kevin Moylan (8) with 42 points from Michael Mulqueen (16) with 41 points, Pat O’Rourke (14) with 41 points, Raymond Hehir (14) with 41 points, Brian Cadogan (15) with 41 points and Jason Hogan (10) with 40 points. Paul O’Neill (10) won the gross with 38 points.
Kilrush
IN the seniors’ outing last Wednesday at Kilrush, the winners were Michael Hemmings, S O Donnell and Aeneas O Connor from Denis F Nagle, Noel Enright and Mick Lane with third spot filled by Tom Prendeville, Tom O Dea and Peter W Glynn.
The winner of the ladies’ singles on Thursday was Mary O’Sullivan with 35 points from Anne Brennan on 34 points and Margaret Clancy on 33. The category winners were Imy Kerrigan with 30 points, Mary G Nolan with 32 points and Nicola O’Leary with 33 points.
In the 18-hole mixed on Friday, Tom Prendeville and Muriel Kiely were the winners from Jim (senior) and Mary Young. In third place were Pascal Looney and Ailish Lorigan, while the gross was won by Declan O’Donovan and Marion Brennan.
The winners of the team-of-three club fundraiser at the weekend were Declan Conway, Finbar and Tony McMahon with 96 points from Noel McMahon, Declan O’Donovan and Denis Hassett on 93 points with third spot filled by Seamus O Doherty, Denis F Nagle and Brian Scanlan with 92 points.
There will be a 12-hole mixed this Friday with a draw for partners at 6.15pm.
The Young Trophy singles stroke event will take place this Sunday. This is the first competition in a rescheduled open week, which had to be curtailed due to inclement weather earlier in the month.
Spanish Point
LAST weekend, the president’s (Paddy Cleary) prize was played for at Spanish Point. A big entry turned out to honour Paddy who is in his second year as president and has been involved with the club since his youth, serving as captain on three different occasions and on committee for many years.
Conditions were very windy especially on Sunday but despite this scoring was very good. Earlier in the week, the president’s prize to the juniors was played for and also his prize to the ladies was completed last month. The prize-giving function that evening was well attended with Paddy’s extended family and members enjoying the occasion.
The winner was John Meere (14) with 38 points from Eoghan O’Loughlin (3) on 37 points, Brendan Reddan (14) on 36 points, Brendan Sexton (15) on 34 points and Liam Burke (18) on 32 points.
The gross was won by Brian O’Loughlin (11) with 24 points. Other prize winners were past president, Michael Hillery (14) with 28 points; first nine, Gerry Gallagher (20) with 19 points; second nine, Garry Carroll (13) with 16 points and nearest the pin, Liam Burke. Ladies: Maura Burke. Juniors: 1. Ken Moran (27) with 41 points; 2. Patrick Kyne (16) with 35 points; 3. Jack Moran (25) with 35 points.
In the seniors’ open last week, the winner was John Fitzgerald (20) with 36 points.
The winner of the Friday open was Aidan Sexton (17) with 37 points. Members are asked to note that the parent club open team fundraiser has been postponed from next weekend to September 1 and 2.
Portumna
FRANK Ryan’s captain’s prize will be played for this Saturday and Sunday. There is a nine-hole play-off on Sunday evening. The format is 18-hole stroke.
There will also be a nine-hole re-entry competition for the ladies, which can be played anytime up to and including this Friday.
Suzanne Corcoran Kenny was selected to the Irish senior team to play in the 2012 European Senior Ladies’ Team Championship in Golf Club Lugano, Switzerland, from September 4 to 8.
In the men’s 18-hole singles last weekend, the winner was Eamonn Hodgins (11) with 39 points from Brian Fahey (16) with a similar score. Sean Broderick (9) was third with 39 points. Cathal O’Byrne (4) won the gross with 35 points, while the seniors’ section was won by Liam Keane (19) with 39 points.
The ladies’ 18-hole stroke competition was won by Marese Cooney (27) with 73 from Lily Craydon (28) with 75 and Caroline Carr (27) with 76.
Old trophy returns
PORTUMNA Golf Club has recently acquired a beautiful trophy dating back to its foundation in 1913. It’s a silver cup presented as a captain’s prize and won in 1914 by Ned Wilson who worked as an engineer on the building of Portumna Bridge. It was donated to PJ Starr by his granddaughter, Katie Reid, who found it in her grandmother’s house during a spring clean. It is now on permanent display at Portumna Golf Club.
Declan O’Shea Trust
THE Declan O’Shea Trust Golf Classic will take place in Kilrush this Friday and Saturday and a big turnout is expected.
Classic to aid Bushypark Centre
THE second annual golf classic in aid of Bushypark Treatment Centre will take place at Ennis on Saturday, August 25. The event is a key financial fundraiser to assist Bushypark Treatment Centre to continue to provide vital services to families affected by alcohol, drug and gambling addictions.
To date, over 4,000 people have availed of the 28-day residential programme in addition to assessment services and family therapy programmes.
