Ennis St John’s win best area award


The Sixmilebridge-Kilmurry team line out for the parade. Photograph by Declan MonaghanCLARE Community Games’ 43rd county athletic finals took place last Sunday in Lees Road in good conditions.
Prior to the finals, there was a very colourful parade of athletes from areas across the county to the music of the Tulla Pipe Band followed by the official opening ceremony. The chairman, Pat Taylor, welcomed everyone including the Mayor of Ennis, Peter Considine and, most of all, the competitors and mangers from the 37 areas around the county. He acknowledged Munster group, Clare County Council and Shannon Development. He acknowledged the volunteers who worked hard on Saturday afternoon preparing the venue for the finals, before wishing all the competitors good luck in the finals.
Mayor Considine acknowledged the work done by the volunteers in Community Games for the children of Clare. He spoke on the great facilities provided by Clare County Council and Ennis Town Council in Lees Road for organisations such as Community Games.
The torch was carried by Shannon Hegarty (Ennis St John’s) while the pledge was read in Irish by Katie O’Dwyer and in English by Darren O’Brien (both (Ennis St John’s).
The Shannon Development Cup for the best-presented area was won by Cooraclare-Cree and was presented by Kevin O’Loughlin. The Dan O’Donoghue Trophy for the runner-up in this category was won by Clarecastle-Ballyea and this award was presented by Peter Considine. Third place in this category was won by Doora-Barefield and they received the Meakins Family Shield from Graham Meakins.
Corofin-Kilnaboy won the award for the best-presented small area and the O’Sullivan Family Shield was presented by Cecilia O’Sullivan.
Parteen won the award for the best mascot and the Jim Casey Shield was presented to them by Clare chairman Pat Taylor. The Patrick Hawes Shield for the girls’ U-16 1,500 went to Aisling Kelly (Doonbeg). The Christy Gormley Memorial Cup for the boys’ U-16 1,500m was won by Kevin Mulcaire (Clarecastle-Ballyea). The Shannon Family Shield for the girls’ marathon was won by Caoimhe Harvey from Carrigaholt-Cross. Sean Collins from (Ennis St John’s) won the Tommy McCarthy Cup for his success in the boys’ marathon.
The Ulster Bank Cup for the best athletic area was won by (Ennis St John’s).
The athletics finals produced some great competition.
