Ennis St John’s named best athletics area


ENNIS St John’s won 17 events at the Golden Vale Milk Clare Community Games 40th anniversary county athletics finals, which took place last Sunday in Lees Road in ideal weather conditions.

Clare chairman Pat Taylor welcomed those present, including the participants, the Mayor of Clare Christy Curtin; Councillor Michael Guilfoyle, who represented the Mayor of Ennis; former chairmen, Pat Brassil; Paddy Keane, Kieran Murphy, Tony Bourke, Kevin O’Loughlin and Fiach McHugh. The chairman paid tribute to everyone involved in preparing the athletes for the finals, as well as Golden Vale Milk, Clare County Council and Shannon Development.
Mayor Christy Curtin acknowledged all the volunteers involved over the past 40 years in bringing Community Games to every area in Clare. Councillor Guilfoyle also acknowledged the work done by the volunteers in Community Games for the children in Clare. He spoke about the facilities provided by Clare County Council and Ennis Town Council in Lees Road for organisations such as Community Games.
The torch was carried by Gerard Kennedy, Ennis St John’s, while the pledge was read in Irish by Niamh O’Brien and in English by Darren O’Brien, both from Ennis St John’s.
The athletics got underway at 1pm with the U-10 relay heats. This year, there were two new events, discus for U-16 girls and javelin for U-16 boys.
The inaugural winners of these were Jane Taylor, Quin-Clooney and Jacob Loughnane, Kilkishen-O’Callaghan’s Mills-Oatfield. Ennis St John’s featured in most finals and came out clear winners of the Ulster Bank Cup for best athletics area.
Ennis St John’s were the winners of 17 events; Quin-Clooney, Clonlara and Doora-Barefield won four each; Cooraclare-Cree and Clarecastle-Ballyea won three each; Meelick-Coonagh, Kilrush, Ennistymon-Lahinch-Liscannor and Kilkishen-O’Callaghan’s Mills won two each, while Inch-Kilmaley-Connolly, Newmarket-on-Fergus, An Droichead, Shannon, Carrigaholt-Cross, Killanena-Flagmount, Tulla and Doonbeg won one event each.

THE Munster team finals will take place on Saturday, July 9, at the University of Limerick and Clare will be taking part in all competitions.
