Ennis entertain Kenmare in Munster JB Carr final

ENNIS entertain Kenmare in the first leg of the Munster JB Carr final this Thursday at 2pm. After a great win over Limerick in the semi-final, Ennis will be hoping to regain a title they last held two years ago.

Ennis seniors held a three-ball modified scramble last week when the winners were Greg Fogarty, Peadar Cosgrove and Pat McInerney (HSE) with 78 points. They had three to spare over Willie Moloney, Jim McEnery and Larry O’Farrelly. In third spot were Tom Pender, Tom McGrath and Paul Higgins, also on 75, followed by Gerry Gilligan, Sean Finnerty and Liam Roche on 74, Joe Carmody, Pat Rutherford and Andy Cregan on 74, Frank Sheedy, Brian Higgins and Sean O’Gorman on 73.
The winner of the men’s singles Stableford competition on Friday was John Kelly with 39 points from Senan Ryan with 36 points and Walter O’Brien with 36 points. Stephen Fenlon won the gross with 28 points.
In the ladies’ competition, Patricia O’Donnell won with 37 points from Ann Gallery with a similar score
The winners of the men’s fourball Stableford competition were Ollie Kennelly and Michael O Reilly, 43 points, from Kieran Ryan and Ian Myatt with a similar score. In the ladies’ section, the winners were Ann and Helen Gallery with 40 points from Claire Ruane and Deirdre Molyneaux with 35 points.
There was a team-of-four competition on Sunday when the winners were: Eamonn Kelly, BA Considine, Ger Hanrahan and Charlie McEnery with 87 points. They had three to spare over Andrew Dermody, Val Bredin, Anna Marie Dermody and Peggy Duggan. In third spot, also with 84 points, were Tess Gill, Geraldine Lynch, Pat Gill and Mark Geraghty followed by Michael Culliney, Michael Kenny, Matt Flynn and Frank Sheedy. In fifth place, also with 84 points, were Tom Pilkington, Pádraig Ryan, Larry O’Farrelly and Michael Neylon followed by Brian O’Gorman, David Rushe, Stephen Keane and Adrian Rushe on 83 points. In seventh place on 82 points were Noel and Jack Normoyle, Pat McHugh and Roy Duggan, with ninth spot filled by Ronan Nalty, Niall Howard, Frank Vaughan and David Hoey, also with 82 points.

Lahinch
The winner of the ladies’ July medal competition at Lahinch was Val Shannon (8) with 71 nett from Angela Cullinan (12) with 72 and Una McCarthy (16) with 76.
In Saturday’s men’s singles Stableford on the Castle Course, the winner was Paul O’Gorman (13) with 42 points from Bernard O’Brien (18) with 40 points and Daire Crowe (18) with 39 points. Kieran Maher won the gross with 36 points.
The ladies’ singles competition on the same day was won by Helena Tiernan (24) with 37 points from Mary O’Brien (21) with 35 points and Therese Conway (26) with 34 points. Jenny Hennessy won the gross with 25 points.
In the men’s singles Stableford competition on Sunday, Gerry McMahon (18) won on the Castle Course with 44 points from Morgan Pierse (4) with 39 points and Paul O’Brien (6) with 39 points.

Shannon
The winner of the August medal at Shannon was Gavin O’Donnell with 63. He had two strokes to spare over Noel Morgan, who was followed by Ronan Hynds 66, John Mc Phillips 67, Colm O’Flynn 68, Benny O’Shea 69, Damian Casey 69 and Peter McLaughlin 69.
The gross was won by Jamie O’Shea with 69 from Ed Hickey, 73.

Dromoland
The men’s weekend Stableford competition at Dromoland was won by Robert Deegan with 38 points from Pat Reale with 37 points and Tony Byrne with 36 points.  The winner of the 18 and over handicap section was Frank O’Grady with 36 points while Cormac O’Neill won the junior section with 39 points.
Dromoland Golf and Country Club also held a course record week for members and visitors. Setting the record for the men was Pádraig McGrath with a gross of 71. For the ladies, the record has been set by Joan Ryan.
This weekend’s men’s competition is an 18-hole singles Stableford event.
The lady captain’s (Maureen McKeogh) prize was played for last week when the winner was Maeve McMahon with 38 points from Katrina O’Neill, 37 points, Dorothea Madden with 37 points and Mary O’Donnell with 36 points. Mairéad Bergin won the gross.
In the junior section, the winner was Cathy O’Toole with 39 points from Dervla O’Neill with 36 points.
Other prizewinners were Collette Colleran (past captain’s), Bernadette McDermott (front nine), Yvonne Shanaghan (back nine), Dorothy Brennan (nearest the pin) and Jo Linnane (long drive).
Dromoland Open Week commences on Monday, August 13 and timesheets will operate (061 368444).

Woodstock
The captain’s (James Carmody) prize will be played for this Saturday and Sunday at Woodstock.
In the Wednesday open singles, Gary Greene was the winner with 41 points from Aaron Donegan with 40 points and Paddy Vaughan with 40 points.
In the club singles, Oliver McNamara (11) was the winner with 39 points from Ray Casey (6) with 39 points and Noel Dinan (14) with a similar score.
The club mixed scramble will continue this Thursday, with the tee reserved from 5.45pm to 6.15pm.

Kilrush
The seniors captain’s (Barry Taylor) prize was played for at Kilrush last Wednesday when the winner was John Stapleton from John Donnelly with Tom Coffey in third spot followed by Aeneas O’Connor, Tom Prendeville and Denis Hassett. Tom Cleary won the past captain’s prize.
The senior men’s invitational scramble for ladies was won by Dolores Reidy, Imy Kerrigan and Mary Keating from Maeve Murphy, Mary McCarthy and Marion Brennan, with third spot filled by Clare Pyne, Agnes Shannon and Kathleen Haugh.
The winners of the ladies’ open team of three on Thursday were Marion Brennan, Mary Keating and Mary Bolton with 87 points.  They had three to spare from Anne Brennan, Annie Gallagher and Nicola O Leary with third spot filled by Margaret Clancy, Margaret Hehir and Muriel Kiely on 83 points followed by Elayne Hickey, Jenny Cagney and Mary Sadlier (Lahinch) on 82 points.
The Young Trophy, an open singles stroke competition, was played for on Sunday when the winner was Gerard Sheehan (Castletroy) (17) with 65 from Dylan Keogh (Woodstock) (19) with 68 and Greg Young (6) with 70. Neil Browne (6) won the gross with 75 while the category winners were Ray Keogh (6) with 73, George Nolan (16) with 71 and Denis Hassett (23) with 73.
Open week continues this weekend with a mixed on Friday, a singles Stableford on Saturday and a singles stroke on Sunday.
Members are asked to note changes to the fixtures list for August. The Hospital Cup, a men’s singles competition, takes place on August 19 while the president’s (Jimmy McSwiggan) prize will be played for on Saturday, August 25.

East Clare
The winner of the men’s 18-hole stroke competition at East Clare was Ger Beatty (17) with 65 nett from Barry Hurley (11) with 67 nett and Val Donnellan (8) with 67 nett.
Seamus O’Dwyer (23) was the winner of the men’s Stableford competition.
In the ladies’ 18-hole stroke competition, Marese Mannion was the winner with 69 nett from Mary Mannion on 70. The category winners were Fiona Kinsella, 74 nett, Bess Fennessy, 74 nett and Sheena Mannion, 73 nett.
The winners of the nine-hole scramble were Stephen Moloney, Bess Fennessy, John Fleming and Batt Skehan from Ger Hogan, Mary Bugler and Brigid Minogue, with third spot filled by Eoghan Mannion, Mike O’Donoghue, Noreen Skehan and Ina Reddan.
The winners of last week’s ladies’ competition were Regan Conway, Marie Moloney and Mary Joe Minogue.
There will be an open men’s and ladies singles competition this weekend.

Spanish Point
The popular Friday evening open nine- hole team scramble continues through the summer and despite the poor weather last week, a big number entered, with the winners shooting two under gross. They were Rick Selzer (8), Thomas Walsh (24), David Downes (28) and Patrick Hogan (18).
Last week’s Tuesday senior open winner was John Fitzgerald (20) with 37 points. A big entry played in the singles Stableford competition last weekend when the winner was Conor Egan (7) with 39 points from Joe O’Rourke (12) 35 points,  John J Skerritt (11) 35 points and Cyril Ryan (21) 35 points.
The programme for the bank holiday weekend includes a singles competition with golfer of the year points on offer and an open competition on Monday. A timesheet will operate.
The Londis Open day competition was won by Niamh Carey (33) on a score of 43 points followed by Helen O’Sullivan (34) with 41 points. In third place was Kathleen Dunworth with 38 points followed by Olive Kelly and Ann Bradshaw. A hole in one was scored at the 14th by Gene Ryan.
The lady captain’s (Nuala Kilroy) charity day will take place this Sunday.

Kilkee
Patsy Bennett won the Kilkee Cup, beating Ger Hackett in the final on a 3 and 2 scoreline.
In the semi-finals, Hackett (8) beat Ger O’Flynn (13) by 2 and 1 while Bennett (17) beat Ger Madden (12) also by 2 and 1.

Portumna
Portumna captain’s (Frank Ryan) prize was played for last weekend, when the format was 18-hole stroke with a nine hole play-off.
The winner was Ivan Austin (16), with 103 nett from Michael Carty (15) 103.5, Enda Quigley (16) 106, Shane Duffy (15) 106.5, Ger Brehony (14) 107 nett and Kevin Donnellen (14) 109.
The gross was won by Pat Quinlan (7) 119 from John Cleary (5) 119.
The leading qualifier was Patrick Cleary (14) 69 nett, while the winner of the past captain’s prize was John Holohan (22) 114 nett.
In the seniors’ section, the winner was Frank Kilkenny (10) 116.  Nearest the pin prizewinner was Ivan Cormican while the longest drive was won by Graham Carty.
Portumna Golf club ladies (Max Handicap 14) will represent Connacht in the ILGU All Ireland finals of the Senior Cup, to be held in Grange Golf Club, Dublin on August 17 -18 following a 3-2 victory over highly fancied past champions Roscommon in Athlone.
Mary Madden is the team captain and the team is Suzanne Corcoran, Ann Cassidy, Claire Callanan, Carmel McLoughlin, Anita Carey and Carmel Cunningham.
On August 17 they will play the Island at 8.50am. The semi finals will be at 4pm, with the final on Saturday, August 18.
Portumna Golf Club will hold an open men’s left-handed competition on Friday, August 24.
In the seniors’ competition last week, Brendan Foley (8), Shannon was the winner with 38 points from Martin Kennedy (9) with 36 points and John Kennedy (16), also with 36 points.
Last Monday’s open competition was won by Conor Barry (16) with 41 points from Niall Cormican (10) with 37 points and Niall Moloney (15) with 37 points. JP McLoughlin (scratch) won the gross with 36 points.
The junior golf camp will take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday August 15, 16 and 17 and further details are available from Jim (087 6411711).
This Saturday, there will be an 18-hole open competition with a timesheet in operation.

Gort
The winner of the men’s singles competition at Gort last weekend was Niall Finnegan (7) with 39 points from Stephen Dervan (13) with 38, Paul Ryan (16) with 37 and Ciaran Coughlan (13) also with 37.
The gross was won by David Quirke (4) with 29 points.
Monday’s open singles was won by Tony Kenny (9) with 43 points from Eamon Grimes (15) with 39 points. The gross was won by Philip McNamara (9) with 25 points.
Open week commences this Saturday and continues until August 12.

Left-handers
The 21st annual national tournament for left-handed golfers will be held in Tullamore on Friday, August 10. The winner of the gross prize will receive the Bob Charles Trophy, which was donated to the Irish left-handers by Charles after his British open win at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s in 1963.
The winner of the nett prize will receive the national trophy while the Martin Quinlan Trophy will be presented to the best senior (over 55).
The 18-hole Stableford competition is open to all left-handed golfers with GUI handicaps.

Clarecastle
John Casey, with an excellent score of 43 points, was the winner of the Clarecastle Society’s President’s (Liam Barry) prize, which was played for at Dromoland. Frank Conway was second, James Murtagh third and John McGrath fourth. Rodger McMahon claimed the nearest-the-pin prize and Noel Connellan won the longest drive. The nines winners were won by Johnny Meere and Ciaran Kelly. Mike Foley was the winner of the past president’s prize and Pat O’Sullivan won the guests’ section.

Cooraclare-Cree
THE annual Cooraclare-Cree Society captain’s (Clare Pyne) day will be held at Kilrush on Bank Holiday Monday. Tee times can be had from society secretary Michael Studdert on 087 2299476.

Golf classic for O’Regan Park
A golf classic in aid of the development of O’Regan Park in Newmarket will take place at Dromoland Golf Club on September 5 and 6.
The outing will take the format of a modified scramble and will be for teams of four.
In March, Obair sent out a request to members of the community to form a committee for the development of local recreation facilities in the village. O’Regan Park was given as a suitable location for such facilities, as it is located in the heart of the village and accessible for all.
Planning is well underway and plans can be viewed at Obair, at the local library and online on the County Council Website.

Pitch and Putt
Denis McElligott and PJ Considine won the two-ball scramble at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club at the weekend. Gareth Kerin and Tony Clancy were in second place.
Sunday’s three-ball scramble was won by Noel Cuddihy, Michael Kerin and Niall Seery with a score of 31 under.
There will be a club competition on this Sunday.
