Ennis chase All-Ireland JB Carr title


Ennis seniors will be in Woodenbridge, Wicklow, this weekend for the national finals in the JB Carr competition. Having won the Munster title for the first time last week, hopes are high that they can go on and add the national crown to their winnings.
Earlier this week, team manager Jimmy McNamara took the squad to the Wicklow venue for a practice round ahead of the weekend’s competition.
Meanwhile, 103 men and 36 ladies played for the Ennis senior’s captain’s (Pat O’Reilly) prize last week.
The winner of the men’s even t, with 45 points, was Paul Mockler. He had five to spare over Peter Daly who was followed by Noel Pilkington with 38, T. J. Kerins with 38. Tim Kelly with 38, Pat Cahill with 37, Tom Fox with 37, Jim Scully with 37, John White with 36 and Charlie McEnery with 36. The winner of the categories were Richard Pyne (0-12) with 35, John Guilfoyle (13 to 19) with 35 and Sean O’Gorman (20 and over) with 34.
In the ladies section, played over 14 holes, Margaret Dinan was the winner with 28 points from Geraldine O’Mahony on 26, Noreen Doohan on 26, Derry Nalty on 26, Brid Kelly with 26, and Anne Casey with 26.

Daniel off to school

Daniel Brennan, a junior member of Shannon Golf Club is heading off every success as he heads off to the Darren Clarke Golf School in Northern Ireland in order to further his golfing education.
The Wednesday men’s open singles saw Brennan record vivtory when his 41 points was three too good for the rest of the field. Daniel covered the opening nine in level par with dropped shots at the 8th and 9th being offset by birdies at the 5th and 6th.His only concession to par on his inward journey was a double bogey at the 17th but he recorded birdies at the 13th, 15th, 16th and 18th.
Daniel continues to be an excellent junior member and this year has seen his handicap reduced from 8 to 3. In second place was John Paul Meaney who edged out Walter Walsh by virtue of a better back nine, both returning 38 points. Visitor Mike Whelan from East Clare won the gross with 33 points.
The ladies September Medal saw 11year old Lisa O Shea take the honours by virtue of a better back nine from Bridget McCaul, both returning 69 nett. In third place was Lynn Kelly on 70 nett. Vie Leahy was fourth with 73 nett while Brid Walsh was 5th with 74 nett. The gross was won by Naoimh McMahon with 84
The final men’s major, the Masters was played on Saturday when the leading 60 Golfers in the golfer of the year order of merit strove manfully in tropical conditions in an effort also to win the golfer of the year accolade.
After the first round Maurice Murphy and Bryan Power led the field with a brace of 66’s followed by John Gubbins and Seamus Doyle with 68’s. In the second round with John Gubbins and Bryan Power wilting in the heat the title lay between Seamus and Maurice and with both returning a brace of 69’s Maurice captured the title by two shots from Seamus. Mention must be made of the best score of the day, a 64 nett returned by Michael Hallinan in the second round which propelled him into 4th place. Third was captured by Michael Corry with 138 while Patrick Madden and Ross Walsh were 5th and 6th respectively with 139 and 140. The prize for best first 18 was won by Bryan Power with 66 while best second 18 was captured by James Morrissey. Runner up Seamus Doyle won GOY with 410 representing his six best cards.
The September special voucher will be the men’s competition this weekend while the ladies will have a team of three competition.

Woodstock

Last week’s open singles at Woodstock was won by Chris Power (15) with 44 points from Liam O’Connor (12) with 39 points and Ronan Gilmartin (18) with 38 points.
In the weekend club singles Cormac Walshe (16) was the winner with 44 points from Mark Barrett (18) with 43 points and Paul Mullane (17) with 42 points.
This week’s competition will be the September medal.
Fran Feighery was the winner of the weekend’s ladies singles Stableford competition with 36 points.
The attraction on this Sunday will be the masters final, an 18 hole stroke competition and it will be followed by an 18 hole Stableford competition.
Entries are now being accepted for the Sheelagh Garvey matchplay tournament.

Kilrush

Muriel Kiely (30) was the winner of the Vincent and Peggy Ward trophy in the ladies seniors competition with 25 points. She won by a point from Margaret Clune (32) with third spot willed by Clare Pyne (19) with 24 points. They were followed by Pearl Mulcaire (28) 24 points, Imy Kerrigan (15) 22 points and Carmel Lillis (28) 22 points.
In the ladies singles Stableford competition the winner was Mary O’Sullivan (22) with 39 points from Maeve Murphy (26) with a similar score. In third spot with 38 points was Nicola O’Leary (33) followed by Margaret Griffin (28) with 36 points. The category winners were: category 1: Niamh Whelan (12) 34 points; category 2: Kathleen O’Brien (27) 34 points; category 3: Peggy Mulqueen (34) 36 points.
Last week’s seniors team of three competition at Lahinch was won by Denis Nagle, Bill Murphy and PJ Maher with 96 points from A O’Connor; D Kenny and J. Donnelly with 92 points with third spot filled by Tom O’Dea; M Carrig and B Taylor with 91 points.
In the individual section, Michael Hemmings (18) had the best score with 45 points from Oliver McNamara (13) on 40 points and Tom Cleary (18) on 39 points.

Seanie Neylon was the winner of the recent club matchplay at Doonbeg Links. He beat Vivian Killeen 2 and 1 to retain the title.
The summer league has come down to the last eight and Michael Horgan, Pat Cotter, Declan Conway, Diarmaid O Donnell, Kevin Hayes, James Griffin, Nigel Dillon and Padraig Hayes will play out the final over two days this weekend.
Entries are now been taken for the fourball matchplay that will commence shortly. Last day for entries is this Sunday.

Portumna

The winners of the open three-ball competition at Portumna at the weekend were: Anita Carey (12) Mary Madden (22) and Mary McElroy (28) with 55 points, from Shane (6) and Paddy Ryan (16) and Mick Keyes (11) with 53 points In third spot with a similar score were John O Gorman (17) Des Clarke (20) and Niall J Kelly (16).
Portumna won the Jack O’Sullivan Cup last Saturday after a 21 year lapse. Ballinamore took a slender 3/2 first leg lead into the lion’s den at Portumna on Saturday afternoon in their bid to win the club’s first ever Provincial Pennant. The Galway club took a decisive victory 21 years after they last won the Jack O’Sullivan. On that occasion they beat Ballina and one Portumna player now holds two Jack O’Sullivan medals, as John Harte was a playing member of the victorious side in 1989 as well as on Saturday.
The result was never in doubt as Portumna quickly amassed large leads in each match through 9 holes. In the end they ran out both easy and deserving winners 5/0 on the day to secure a 7/3 overall victory.
The team line-up was Lesley O’Meara and Simon Lowry, John Harte and John Cleary, Ger Brehony and Brian Grogan, Brendan Naughton Snr and Brendan Naughton Jnr, Sean Cleary and Mick McGivern. Subs James Porter, Ray Lawless, Peader Ryan and Mike Kiely
The team was managed by Michael Carty who also played on the winning 1989 team.
The club are running the ever popular three-ball open, it will run from September to April with a visiting team guaranteed a qualifying spot each month.
There will be a club outing to East Clare on Sunday September 26.
Portumna will travel to Castlebar on Tuesday to represent Connacht in the All-Ireland finals of the Junior Cup.

Dromoland

The winner of the Dromoland ladies 18 hole competition last weekend.was Dorothy Brennan from Siobhan Dyar with Maria Nolan in third spot followed by Mary Arthur. The gross was won by Suzanne McConway.
In the men’s last weekend the winner of the medal competition off the blue tees was Brian Hickey with 67 from Gerry Barrett on 70. Alan White scored 69 won win off the white tees from John Gaynor on 72.
The winner of the junior competition was Aaron Duggan with 69 points.
Seamus McEnery won the senior scratch cup wih 76 from Stephen Moloney on 78, Tony Cleary on 79, Paul O’Brien on 79. Paul O’Neill won the prize for nearest the pin.
Next weekend competition will be 18-hole single Stableford

Spanish Point

In the recent scotch foursomes competition at Spanish Point, the winners were Johnnie Wilson (18) and Sean O’Connell (17) with 42 points.from Gary Carroll (11) and Mike Hennessy (8) with 40 points.
In the seniors competition, Patrick O’Boyle (18) 34 points won from Brian O’Loughlin (11) 34 points. Last week Gerry Meade (16) with 39 points fron Dave Fitzgerald (14) with a similar.
Fergal Hehir (15) with 37 points won the open singles from Eamonn McMahon (17) 36 points with third spot filled by Willie McNamara (17) with 36 points.
Last weekend’s singles winner was Eamonn McMahon (17) with 36 points from Noel McMahon (18) with a similar score.
The team of four nine-hole scramble was won by Geraldine Reddan, Mervin Hehir, Kevin Hynes and Brendan Reddan with six under gross.
The recent golfer of the year singles was won by Sean McMahon (10) with 37 points from Brendan Reddan (16) with 36 points and Tom Mernagh (5) with 35 points.

Ennis

In the Eileen Murphy foursomes at Ennis, the winners were Bridie Keane and Mary Walshe with 38 from Maura Ryan and Anne Kehoe with a similar score.
In the Ladies Memorial Day the winner of the men’s section was Frank Owens with 41 points from Cathal O’Gorman on 40 and Alfie Jones on 38. Sinead Mortell won the ladies section with 34 points.
The Friday open singles was won by Anne Marie Darmody with 36 points from Maeve O’Grady on 34 and Eithne Murphy on 31.

East Clare

In a ladies golfer of the year competition at East Clare, Deirdre Cooney was the winner with 64 nett from Margaret McNamara on 65. The category winners were Eileen Donnellan with 69, Peggy Ryan with 66 and Joan Kinsella with 76.
The winners of the ladies seniors competition were Margaret O’Grady, Mary Collins and Anna McGillicuddy.
In the men’s fourball the winners were Danny Minogue and Joe Brady with 48 points from Sean Walsh and Michael O’Halloran with 45 points.
There will be ladies and men’s 18 hole singles competitions this weekend.

Lahinch

Last Monday’s ladies singles Stableford competition on the Castle course was won by Marjorie Ahern (13) with 43 points from Emily Chambers (10) and Sarah Barry (17) on 40 points. Aedin McCarthy won the gross with 28 points.
The men’s singles Stableford competition on the championship course on Saturday was won by Derek O’Neill (7) with 40 points from Kevin McGrath (6) who had a similar score. Gerry Gough (10) was third with 38 points.
In Sunday’s men’s fourball Stableford competition, Darragh McDermott (13) and Peter Hennessy (4) were the winners with 43 points from Mahon Murphy (9) and Michael J Gilmartin (16) with 40 points.
The ladies singles v par competition on Monday was won by Val Shannon (7) with 3 up from Olivia Hayes (6) with 2 up.

Gort

Last Sunday’s men’s 18-hole singles Stableford competition at Gort was won by David Kehoe with 43 points from Seamus Noone on 42, Sean Hanbury on 41 and Shane Keane on 38 with Colman Cooney winning the gross with 34 points.
Last week’s open singles was won by Kieran Grimes with 41 points from Paul Mohan on 39 and John Barrett with 37. David Quirke won the gross with 34 points.
In last week’s ladies singles stroke competition, Josie Collins was the winner from Ruth Naughton, both scoring 71.
There will be a men’s 18 hole fourball competition this weekend while the ladies will have an 18-hole stroke medal competition.

Clare teachers

The Clare teachers society will hold their first outing of the new season on Saturday to Gort where the tee will be available from 9.30am-11am members wishing to get on the timesheet should contact Joan at 086 3167365.

Sixmilebridge

Sixmilebridge society members will play for their captain’s (Ed Crowe) prize on this Saturday in Ballykisteen. The tee is reserved from 11am.

Cranny-Coolmeen

Cranny-Coolmeen society recently held their captain’s (Michael Daly) prixe in Kilrush where the winner was Oliver McNamara with 40 points from John McNeilis on 39 and Raymond Shannon on 35. Tommy Coffey won category 1 with 35 points from Gerry Bredin on 33 and Ciaran Browne on 32.
Category 2 was won by Michael Murphy with 32 points from Pat Shannon on 31 and Mary McNamara on 30 while category 3 was won by John Kenneally on 31, Francis Kelly on 31 and Michael Meaney on 29.
Michael McMahon won the past captain’s prize while Chrissie Daly was the winner of the long drive prize.

Pitch and putt

The winner of the Clare Road pitch and putt outing on Sunday was PJ Considine from John Mc Elligott with David McElligott in third spot. Declan Sheedy won the gross.
The net scramble winners were Declan Sheedy, Gabriel Kerin and PJ Considine while the gross winners were Timmy Sullivan, Gareth Kerin and Tommy Slattery.

Cill na Mona plan for the future

The Cill Na Mona Pitch & Putt Club, for the first time this year, held summer coaching sessions for junior members which proved a success with the amount of youths showing an interest in improving their game.
Head coach, Helen Daly was delighted with the response and, at the conclusion, paid tribute to Martin and Ann Commane, owners of the course, for their support.
On the final days a number of competitions were held and the winners were as follows: scramble winners: James Lyons, Shane Dowling and Conal Keane. The chipping competition winner was Shane Kerin with David Mescill runner-up. Conal Keane won the putting competition with Conor Leyden as runner-up.
